Overview

Bechtel has a long tradition of technical and engineering excellence in supporting multiple industries. Bechtel’s internship program was created to cultivate real-life industry interest based on hands-on experience. Many new university graduate hires began their careers at Bechtel as a student intern.

Each year, we hire many Mechanical Engineering interns. The total number of hires and start dates are subject to workload and business conditions. Locations will vary based on project needs, and may include Houston, TX and Reston, VA, along with various project sites.

General Job Duties

Mechanical and systems engineering interns assist with the engineering design, specification, and support of:

- Industrial, petrochemical, aerospace, and military facilities
- Railways, airports, ports, and industrial cities
- Mechanical equipment, fire protection, and HVAC systems
- Biological, chemical, and radioactive waste treatment plants
- Equipment troubleshooting and operating plant services
- Materials engineering and technology
- Systems engineering and configuration management
- Nuclear, fossil, and renewable fuel power plants

Typical Activities

- Select and specify equipment
- Prepare flow or detailed system piping and instrumentation diagrams
- Perform system and equipment sizing calculations
- Establish facility design requirements and develop the system safety basis
- Project engineering
- Review supplier designs
- Prepare ventilation and instrumentation diagrams
- Perform corrosion and erosion evaluations for systems and equipment
- Author work processes and procedures

- Advance Simulation: Using simulation tools and methods to help develop design concepts and detailed engineering plans
- Field/Construction: Facilitating build process on-site by modifying engineering documents to support a successful construction operation
- Plant Design & Piping: Reviewing & designing the placement of plant equipment, systems and piping to ensure optimal space utilization
- Project Estimating, Scheduling & Cost Control: Estimating costs of projects and developing project schedules by providing an objective view of project performance
- Quality Assurance: Reviewing our work to ensure it meets or exceeds Bechtel’s quality standards and our customers’ quality expectations
- Startup & Facility Operations: Testing, calibrating and verifying mechanical and electrical equipment and systems on a project site to have it ready for “turn on,” with an operating manual

Basic Qualifications

- Currently enrolled in a four-year Bachelor of Science degree program in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering from an accredited college or university
- Completed at least one year of undergraduate studies in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
- Possess the eligibility to work and remain in the U.S. without sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications

- Currently enrolled in a four-year Master of Science degree program in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering from an accredited college or university
- Previous co-op or internship experience
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong GPA
