Project Overview:

Thacker Pass is the largest known lithium resource in the United States. Once complete, the mine and processing facilities will produce more lithium carbonate than any other facility in the United States

As the EPCM contractor for Lithium Americas, Bechtel is responsible for managing and integrating the efforts of a team of contractors engineering and building the facility. The project is in the high desert and wide-open spaces of north-central Nevada about 25 miles from the Oregon border, 1 hour northwest of Winnemucca, Nevada and 3 hours northeast of Reno.

 

Job Summary:

In this role, you will monitor and organize subcontractor planning, safety, quality, and technical activities on a complex project with multiple stakeholders’ involvement, through the coordination and instruction of subcontractor’s management staff. Your field supervision will help ensure operations are planned to coincide with overall established schedules and that work methods are planned and executed safely. The Tanks Superintendent is responsible for supervising and directing operations within the tanks discipline. Supervises and directs subordinate supervisors, and others, as assigned. Ensures assigned construction performance is following specifications and within schedules and budgets. #LI-NP1  #LI-NP1

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Monitors and directs subcontractor activities, through coordination and instruction of subcontractors' management staff within the area of responsibility.   
  • Role supports on large projects of high complexity with multiple stakeholders’ involvement. 

Planning: 

  • Reviews and monitors subcontractor construction schedules, resource charts, and material and equipment requirements. 
  • Reviews and approves where necessary, subcontractor construction methods, schedules, manning charts, and material and equipment requirements.  
  • Leads the construction operations impact on external interfaces to ensure they coincide with the overall established schedules. 

Safety / Quality: 

  • Monitors installation of materials and equipment to assure conformance with drawings, specifications, vendor, and other requirements  
  • Implements and enforces policies, procedures and related work rules as established by field construction management.  

Technical:

  • Works with Construction Field Engineers, Foremen, and Craft Professionals, in interpreting Engineering design documents, vendor documents, and other technical documents 
  • Coordinates engineering solutions with Subcontractors, and Foremen and Craft Professionals. 
  • Coordinates with Design on constructability issues. 

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13 years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Provide ES&H leadership to superintendents and subcontractors related to the tank scope. This includes preparation and implementation of safety procedures and leading Bechtel and subcontractor safety meetings and participating in safety investigations.
  • Inspect site for unsafe conditions and practices and take appropriate action to correct deficiencies.
  • Coordinate safety training in conjunction with the Environmental Safety and Health Supervisor.
  • Champion the cause of ZERO Accident Philosophy. Ensure that Bechtel and local/national safety codes, requirements and standards are being complied with within assigned area of responsibility.
  • Monitor the activities of craft to ensure compliance with specifications and schedules.
  • Responsible for the cost, schedule and optimization of craft labor and maintaining the overall construction schedule, the 90 day and four week look ahead schedules for labor and equipment.
  • Interface with Labor/Industrial Relations for craft recruitment and training programs.
  • Review craft time records using established automated tools.
  • Review and approve subcontractor equipment/personnel mobilization and demobilization.
  • Responsible for implementing corporate project policies, procedures, and instructions within assigned tank operations.
  • Responsible for the implementation of project policies, procedures, and instructions within assigned operations. 
  • Ensures current design documents are used to complete the work and that all design changes are approved prior to implementation.
  • Provide input to quantity tracking applications and review weekly installed quantities to Project Controls.
  • Prepare material requisitions for tools and consumables and coordinate through Procurement to obtain these materials.
  • Assist in performing construction testing as required.
  • Plan the manpower and equipment required to execute the job.
  • Prepare reports and forecasts, including summary of construction progress, craft personnel forecasts, and expenditures forecasts.
  • Perform employee reviews and identify training and development opportunities for subordinate tanks personnel.
  • Perform other duties as required by Bechtel management.
  • Coordinate activities with other area superintendents and client resident representatives, as necessary to meet project objectives.
  • 15 years of demonstrated experience in tank building supervision, excellent problem-solving skills and ability to lead and manage change.
  • Knowledge and experience of construction methods of various types of field erected tanks keeping in mind coatings and any special systems for each design.
  • Working in a field construction environment understanding specifications, vendor procedures, instructions & codes with working knowledge of API-650, API-620, API-625, ASME Section VIII, AWWA, and FERC requirements.
  • Knowledge of welding processes such as SMAW, FCAW, SAW and the use of Automatic Girth Welders, Down Flat
  • Tractors, and automated isolation machines.
  • Knowledge of large crawler cranes, tower cranes, SPMTs and heavy lift programs
  • Technical knowledge of tank building equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge of requirements for cryogenic insulation including foam block, deck blanket, and perlite.
  • Knowledge of requirements for Lock Out Tag Out.
  • Heavy industrial direct hire construction experience commensurate with the type of work to be undertaken.
  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Ability to work with multi-national employees and across different languages.
  • Ability to train less experienced team members and provide mentorship to others.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving ability.

 

Additional Information:

  • Work requires extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, working on elevated platforms, working on uneven surfaces and working in small or confined spaces. Some lifting may be required. Must have the ability to walk into and out of the project (enter/egress). Must be able to use appropriate standard issued Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required for each assigned task (i.e. harness, life vest, lift buckets, etc.).
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule as required that may include but not limited to nightshift or split shift.
