Project Field Superintendent - Gatwick Airport

Performs construction engineering assignments of a varied nature requiring a full working knowledge of construction engineering practices. Exercises professional judgment within the framework of broad guidelines provided by superiors. May have responsibility to provide direction to less experienced construction engineers, or construction office technical or clerical personnel. Scope of role includes works within the civil, structural and architectural disciplines.


The project involves the extension of existing airport pier facilities, passenger gate lounges/services, creation of additional aircraft stands, taxiway/pavement interfaces and supporting utility provisions, and candidate should have experience of similar scope.



A. Supervision Received

  • Receives technical and operational supervision from the Project Field Engineer or assigned supervising discipline superintendent / Senior Field Engineer.

B. Supervision Exercised

  • None. May provide technical and administrative direction to subordinate Field Engineers and administrative support staff, as assigned.

C. Contacts

  • Contacts are normally limited to airfield and terminal stakeholders, Building Control, asset integrators, construction, engineering, and Contractor (manual / non-manual) personnel in order to perform construction engineering practices.



  • Monitoring Contractor compliance with Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) requirements, through inspection and surveillance.
  • Review delivery plans and procedures.
  • Resolve engineering, construction, operational interfaces with project superintendents and other project stakeholders.
  • Provide input to project airport communications.
  • Interpret design engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Assist the Project Superintendents and Planners in scheduling and forecasting activities.
  • Review Contractor monthly programme submissions.
  • Review and status Contractor 4 weekly rolling schedule.
  • Prepare Daily Construction Reports (DCR).
  • Review Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS).
  • Review Contractor temporary works design (as assigned), and support the Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC).
  • Provide input to the review and coordination of Contractor detailed design packages, and related vendor drawings.
  • Review Contractor inspection and test plans; conduct quality surveillance, attend hold and witness (inspection and testing) activities and report construction quality issues to the Senior Field Engineer.
  • Provide input to Requests for Information (RFI), Non-Conformance Reports (NCR) and Field Change Documents (FCD) and report on cost / schedule impacts.
  • Provide input to the review of key materials and ensure receipt, storage, withdrawal, installation of materials conforms to project requirements.
  • Review Work Request (WR) and Permits to Work (P2W) for assigned contracts.
  • Report progress of installed commodities on the project quantity tracking systems.
  • Attend completion and turnover walkdown.
  • Identify punch items and manage defect lists for assigned contracts.
  • Ensure as built records are progressively maintained.
  • Review technical of Contractor certification packages.
  • Assist the Project Manager in assessing payment applications.
  • Identify and report project risk, and issues, and support the Project Manager in communicating to the Contractor
  • Provide input to constructability reviews and lessons learned.
  • Provide input on employee reviews of assigned subordinate personnel.
  • Provide input to project reports and key performance indicators.



  • Knowledge of a single technical engineering discipline (Structural Steel / Building Envelope), contracts administration (NEC Form) and/or cost and scheduling relating to the construction of airport projects.
  • Knowledge of requirements for managing temporary works.
  • Awareness of craneage and rigging operations.
  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications in accordance with current Bechtel Standard Application Program (BSAP) standards.
  • Knowledge of Bechtel Core and Standard Work Process Procedures.
  • Awareness of environmental compliance laws and requirements.
  • Knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Accident” safety program.
  • Familiarity with current industry quality standards.


This knowledge is normally gained through:

  • A recognized degree in an engineering or scientific discipline coupled with work experience lead to an understanding of the technical knowledge described above, OR
  • Specialized courses in construction management, AND/OR
  • Work experience as a field engineer, engineer or assistant superintendent leading to an understanding of the technical knowledge described above.



  • All the mandatory training required by Bechtel and GAL as detailed in the Pier 6 Training Matrix.
  • Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)
  • Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)
  • Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) or Coordinator (TWC)
