Project Overview:
Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and we are looking for the talent that will help expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long-lasting energy future for generations to come.
Job Summary:
The Senior Specification Engineer will be responsible for planning, developing, coordinating and reviewing plant design and piping work requirements. The candidate’s technical input will ensure configuration compliance, procurement requirements are met, and complex issues are resolved. Essential duties include reviewing and generating pipe and piping components, related calculations in compliance with European Norms and standards. The candidate must possess deep technical expertise in PED and EN codes. He/She will also be responsible for generating material evaluations, in addition to preparation and execution of material requisitions for bulk pipe, valves and supports, and other piping components. This position has technical responsibility for producing licensing documents, interfacing with regulators and designers, maintaining the safety case and preparing reports. This position will report to the Plant Design & Piping Engineering Group Supervisor (EGS) on the project and will work in coordination with other engineering disciplines to develop licensing and design documents. This position will require travel to the USA for additional training of 30 days or more.
Upon initial hire and onboarding, the position will require full time presence in the Warsaw, Poland office. Part-Time telework flexibility may be an option as the project progresses.
Major Responsibilities:
- Applies standard plant design and piping engineering principles to evaluate methods, modify technical procedures and criteria, and guide decision-making in accordance with PED and relevant EN codes (e.g. EN 13480, EN 1092).
- Participating in reviews and recommending approval of engineering design documents, drawings and data for compliance with PED requirements and criteria.
- Participating in studies that require knowledge of principles and techniques commonly employed in plant design with EN standard piping aligned with PED conformity assessment modules, and UDT oversight requirements.
- Preparing, coordinating, and maintaining piping and valve technical specifications, valve data sheets, and piping material class documentation, that reflect EN standards.
- Executing procurement strategies, including material requisitions, technical bid evaluations and award recommendations for PED certified components and piping assemblies.
- Reviewing Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&ID) for pipe material and valve type suitability per EN standards.
- Generating, reviewing, and validating minimum wall thickness calculations for metallic and non-metallic pipe materials, and branch connection designs using approved methodologies outlined in EN 13480 and related standards.
- Performing flange sizing calculation for sizes that fall outside standard EN tables, applying engineering judgment and compliance principles for justification.
- Support the dispositions of nonconformance reports (NCRs) and Field Change Documents (FCDs) generated by construction teams, with respect to design and regulatory requirements.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Level 1
- Requires bachelor's degree in engineering (or international equivalent) and 5-8 years of relevant experience or in lieu of a degree 9-12 years of relevant work experience.
Level 2
- Requires bachelor's degree in engineering (or international equivalent) and 8-10 years of relevant experience or in lieu of a degree 11-14 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- FE/PE Registration or Polish equivalent (Preferred).
- Previous commercial nuclear power experience. (Preferred)
- Detailed knowledge of local Polish, European codes and regulations regarding power plant piping and valves - both metallic and non-metallic.
