Project Overview:

Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility.

Position Summary:

In this position, the engineer will support design development of Fire Protection Systems and equipment for project(s) by evaluating, selecting, and applying applicable fire safety, techniques, procedures and criteria to originate reports, drawings, calculations, and more with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements. The engineer will work with mechanical engineers, other disciplines/functions, and/or the client.

 

Upon initial hire and onboarding, the position will require full-time presence in the Warsaw office. Part-time telework flexibility may be an option as the project progresses.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Support project needs for design, design review, commissioning, testing, code interpretations, and walk downs at project locations, as required.
  • Independently apply the principles of fire safety in the development of structures, systems, and components.
  • Support construction and operations.
  • Develop fire protection system acceptance protocols.
  • Interface with internal and external customers, as required, for the design, installation, and testing of Fire Protection Systems.
  • Support the development of the fire protection components of the authorization basis documents and other safety submittals.
  • Interface with other disciplines to provide direction, feedback, and validation of engineering and design efforts.
  • Perform Fire Protection reviews to determine compliance with applicable local/NFPA orders, building codes, and other client requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance in the development of fire protection equivalencies to NFPA codes and standards.
  • Provide technical guidance in the review of engineering analyses and engineering judgements for alternative fire barrier systems, opening protectives, and penetration firestops.
  • Support the alignment of the fire protection systems design and installation with the requirements identified in the upper tier requirements in the Authorization Basis Documents, the facility Fire Hazards Analysis documents, and the Engineering Basis of Design documents.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of the fire hazards analysis utilizing recognized fire protection industry approaches, methodologies, calculations, and analysis including advanced fire modeling.

 

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications:

  • Level 1 - BS degree in Fire Protection (or related) Engineering from an accredited university or college with nine (9) years of progressive related experience, or in lieu of degree, fifteen (15) years of progressive related experience.
  • Level 2 - BS degree in Fire Protection (or related) Engineering from an accredited university or college with thirteen (13) years of progressive related experience, or in lieu of degree, nineteen (19) years of progressive related experience.
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
  • Must be authorized to live and work in Poland without sponsorship. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the local/EU fire, life safety, and building codes.
  • Must be familiar with commercial risk management and fire protection protocol.
  • Experience with Microsoft office programs and other computer programs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, planning, and organizational skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Bechtel Corporate guides and standards.
  • Familiarity with UL and FM standards.
  • MS degree in Fire Protection (or related) Engineering from an accredited university or college.
  • Experience working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1, MIL-Q-9858A, or ISO-9000.
