Project Overview:
Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and we are looking for the talent that will help expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long-lasting energy future for generations to come. This position is subject to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations at 10 CFR Part 810 (Part 810), which govern the transfer of hardware, materials, and technology to support the construction and operation of commercial nuclear power plants overseas.
Job Summary:
As a Senior Control Systems Engineer, you will plan and conduct independent work, requiring judgement in the evaluation, selection, application and adaption of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. You will have technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating assignments. You must have a strong working knowledge of the principles and practices related to Control Systems Engineering and understand standard engineering work planning, scheduling and cost estimating. In this role, you will report to an Engineering Supervisor and will interface and coordinate with other Control Systems work groups, other engineering disciplines, other functional departments, business partners and the client in the development of the design.
The ideal candidate will have solid experience in control systems design and will be capable of developing design documents that incorporate the applicable design. In addition, it will be required that the candidate have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), and can be the “face” of Bechtel, promoting our leadership, quality, and safety values, to external partners including vendors, construction companies, and other subcontractors.
Major Responsibilities:
- Design of Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs) for various plant systems
- Participation in the formulation of preliminary and detailed design
- Origination and review of system design criteria
- Origination and review of system design descriptions
- Specification and application of instrumentation and general control valves/appurtances
- Preparation of control systems design packages
- Generation of instrument data sheets and material requisitions
- Origination and review of setpoint calculations
- Design and review of binary and analog control logic
- Data entry to instrumentation, valve and I/O databases
- Design and application of tubing and instrument installations, etc.
- Allocation of facility control systems I/O
- Design and review of control cabinets
- Review of control system network architecture
- Review of supplier (or subcontractor) provided data and documentation
- Participate in supplier factory acceptance testing
- Coordinate with other engineering disciplines and other functions
- Provide technical assistance and some leadership to more junior engineers, designers, drafters
- Coordinate with business partner and client representatives, as needed
- Conduct technical presentations related to Control Systems Engineering design
- Perform other related work as assigned by Engineering Supervisor
Education and Experience Requirements:
- BS or advanced degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Automation/Controls/Instrumentation, Electro-Mechanical or Electronics Engineering from am accredited university or college, with a minimum of 5-8 years’ progressive Control Systems Engineering experience.
- In lieu of degree, 9-12 years’ progressive Control Systems Engineering experience may be considered.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Prior experience in commercial power plant or other industrial process facility design.
- Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards (US, EU, PL) (e.g., IEC, ISA, ISO, ASME, DIN and/or ANSI/IEEE).
- Strong verbal and written communication, planning and organizational skills.
- Strong leadership capabilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 application suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, Visio, PowerPoint, etc.) and other related computer programs required to perform job functions.
- Extensive knowledge of Control Systems Engineering work processes and specifications.
- Willingness to travel on business trips in support of the project as required.
- Highly collaborative, with the ability to work effectively across disciplines, functions and within team environments.
- Knowledge of precedents in the discipline and of principles and practices of related disciplines.
- Preferred Poland Professional Engineering License (SEP) or able to obtain one within 1 year of start date.
