Project Overview:

TROJENA (The Mountains of NEOM) will be an iconic, world-class destination, blending natural and developed landscapes and will offer unique experiences for residents and visitors alike. Located in the northwest of Saudi Arabia in the region of Tabuk just 50km from the coast, TROJENA will be a destination like no other on earth. Based upon the principles of eco-tourism facilities will include a folded vertical village, a lake with water sports and event facilities, high altitude ski village, observatory, world leading health and wellbeing facilities and a nature reserve which will be home to unique wildlife, heritage sites and exploration opportunities. With over 3,600 hotel, 2,200 homes, 9 iconic buildings and 100 world class indoor and outdoor experiences Trojena will become the ultimate mountain destination. Job Summary:

The Environment & Biodiversity Specialist will be responsible for planning, managing, and overseeing various ecological and biodiversity surveys, studies, and reviews during the delivery stages of the Trojena project. The role will provide ecological expertise and specialized knowledge within the environment team, offering advice on ecological impacts, habitat conservation, species protection, and biodiversity management plans to support the delivery of Trojena’s biodiversity vision.

In addition, the role will support environmental compliance by ensuring that all project activities across active work packages meet NEOM’s environmental policies and regulatory requirements. This includes environmental monitoring, reporting, risk mitigation, and ensuring that contractors and stakeholders implement the necessary measures to uphold high environmental standards throughout project execution.
 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates execution of the environmental component of an ESH Program inclusive of technical and administrative aspects. 
  • Helps prepare and implement Environmental Management Plans, associated environmental plans and procedures, and training program. 
  • Provides input to Engineering, Construction, Procurement, Subcontracts, Commissioning, and other groups to assure that environmental requirements and mitigation are integrated within project planning and execution. 
  • Interprets and integrates environmental requirements in proposals, planning documents, risk assessment, and program execution. 
  • Researches moderately complex issues and regulatory requirements, performs studies and environmental assessments, and prepares documentation and reports. 
  • Provides support and guidance for environmental permitting, risk assessments, audits, and reviews involving site conditions, natural resources, cultural resources, and communities. 
  • Helps establish emergency preparedness and performs incident investigations. 
  • Participates in, or leads, meetings with customers, team members, subcontractors, permitting agencies, and other stakeholders. 
  • Conducts inspections and environmental monitoring and sampling to identify risks, evaluate mitigation measures and corrective actions, and assess compliance with contract, regulatory, project, and Bechtel requirements. 
  • Provides guidance and assistance regarding bid proposals and contract requirements, environmental mitigation, permit conditions, sustainability concepts, and protection of environmentally sensitive areas, species, and communities.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental, biology, Ecology, Zoology, Horticulture, Botany Environmental Biology or related sciences.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience across terrestrial, arid or mountainous ecology in large infrastructure projects.
  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. are preferred.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

 

  • Experience with assessment studies, ecological survey planning and execution and conservation plans
  • Track record of working in large and complex projects with critical habitats and endangered/endemic species and demonstrate consistency in the level of work with an extensive technical background in arid ecology.
  • Experience in the GCC is preferred and preferably experience in KSA.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulations (e.g., KSA laws, NCW requirements, IUCN, IFC PS, World Bank, etc.) is essential.
  • Provide technical input and specialized advisory to other teams.
  • Ability to communicate complex ecological/biodiversity concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to plan and conduct fieldwork and site missions when required.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience with GIS and mapping is preferable.
  • Proficient fluency in English is essential, Arabic is a plus.
  • Specialized certifications will be preferable
  • Office-based with site visits to project locations.
  •
