Project Overview:
Bechtel is seeking to recruit high quality project delivery professionals in Engineering, Construction, Project Controls and related disciplines to join our team in Canada.
Bechtel is currently growing our team working on a variety of new transportation and infrastructure projects in the Provinces of Quebec and Ontario, Canada. Candidates are currently being sought in both Montreal, Quebec and Toronto, Ontario.
Job Summary:
The Track & Alignment Engineer is responsible for the preparation of all designs associated with the geometric alignment and trackwork of the Project. The scope of work includes preparation of engineering design drawings, specifications, studies, calculations and reports for all alignment/trackwork elements, in accordance with project requirements. The role also encompasses integration and assurance activities, ensuring that all design elements are fully coordinated with interfacing disciplines. Subsequently, the Track & Alignment Engineer provides technical oversight of activities relating to the Contractors Track & Alignment design and implementation activities, ensuring that project and contractor outputs meet all specified Project Requirements. The Track & Alignment Engineer is to ensure that robust justification and technical assurance are in place to support the product Safety Cases and eventual Project Safety Cases. Furthermore, the role involves management of change to the design ensuring that any modifications are evaluated, documented and integrated into the design without compromising safety, quality, or project requirements.

Major Responsibilities:
- Develop the Projects design criteria and specifications.
- Preparation of the mathematised horizontal and vertical geometric alignment and calculations in accordance with Projects design criteria.
- Perform trackform design including formation and track support system including running rail and track fastening for direct fixation and ballasted track, guard rail consisting of joints and separation blocks, and composite contact rail consisting of rail arrangement, expansion joints, splice joints, end approaches, anchors and insulation, conduit and cable arrangement and switch heating system.
- Perform preliminary trackwork design for special trackwork consisting of crossovers, turnouts, rail expansion devices and buffer stops (bumping posts).
- Monitor and review all work performed by the Contractor and support design changes identified during construction including coordination with field personnel to resolve field issues and development of design solutions.
- Provide input for the management of Projects requirements, ensuring traceability, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
- Participate in the management of interfaces between different civil and rail systems, infrastructure, and stakeholders to facilitate effective communication and collaboration.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks associated with track & alignment, performance, and safety.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including clients, contractors, regulatory agencies, and subject matter experts, to address technical issues and achieve project objectives.
- Participate in engineering reviews, interdisciplinary design reviews and Stage Gate reviews
- Support the identification of risk and measures associated with HAZIDs, HAZOPs, IDCs/IDRs, QRAs and other safety risk assessments and ALARP justification.
- Coordinate and visit jobsite as required, to resolve problems, interpret drawings and documents and provide technical support during the construction phase.
- Coordinate with other disciplines, consultants, attend project meetings from time to time, and record the proceedings of the meetings.
- Review contractors “approved for construction” drawings, respond in a timely manner to technical queries (TQs) and technical submittals to ensure compliance with design documents.
- Support the preparation and implementation of system safety assurance documentation and requirements management processes.
- Take personal responsibility to ensure your own and others’ health and safety – including those who may be affected by the delivery of this role.
- Co‐operate in all matters relating to health, safety and environment, including following safe working procedures at all times and not deviating from agreed safe system of work.
- Advocate, promote and engage Bechtel’s health, safety and environmental policies and initiatives.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Degree or postgraduate qualification in science, engineering from an accredited university or equivalent qualification.
- Minimum of 10+ years progressive experience in delivering rail projects.
- Experience in leading track & alignment design for large size projects
- Preferred Professional Engineer license in Quebec, or able to obtain one in the jurisdiction.
- Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams within complex projects.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Should be proficient in both written and conversational English to work closely in collaboration with other Team members of Bechtel and stakeholders in other locations including Ontario, the United States and the United Kingdom.
- Knowledge of Common Safety Method or CMREA.
- Analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on delivering practical and innovative solutions.
- Fully knowledgeable and conversant with relevant European, American and international civil engineering and railway codes and standards.
- Broad knowledge of precedents in the rail industry.
- Strong English language communication and report writing skills.
- Ability to prepare clear strategic planning procedures and user-friendly templates to assist entities in undertaking forward, strategic planning.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Design Suite software programs and have the ability to prepare reports.
- Bilingual in French and English is preferred.
Essential Behavioural Skills:
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills, be a team player and have a knowledge sharing approach.
- Will have consultancy experience.
- Ability to solve problems by thinking laterally and be able to understand the needs and requirements of the client, and entities – in order to provide planning / design / feasibility solutions in a multi -disciplinary / multi - sectional context.
- Must be able to work within a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team and manage challenging multi-cultural relationships across a range of entities.
- Must be self-driven and able to plan and execute work without direct supervision from senior management and/or peers.
- Must be flexible and adapt to working in a demanding PMO environment, including the need to travel and work remotely if / when required.
