Project Overview:

Bechtel is seeking to recruit high quality project delivery professionals in Engineering, Construction, Project Controls and related disciplines to join our team in Canada.

 

Bechtel is currently growing our team working on a variety of new transportation and infrastructure projects in the Provinces of Quebec and Ontario, Canada. Candidates are currently being sought in both Montreal, Quebec and Toronto, Ontario.

Job Summary:

The Host Railway Deputy Director is required to combine their leadership skill, technical experience and knowledge for the management of adjacent host railways. This includes but not limited to CN, CPKC, VIA Rail and exo. The role will support the Host Railway Director in managing communications and interfaces with various railways entities to ensure there are no conflicts with existing operations and the proposed alignment and associated works. 

 

The scope of responsibilities includes development of processes and procedures to control key activities, identification and implementation of applicable work activities, and develop a coordination plan of how the adjacent railway entities will be proactively managed.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Leadership of the Host Railway function and providing visible leadership by implementing applicable processes and procedures. 
  • Keeping the Host Rail Director informed of technical issues arising from the Host Railway works. 
  • Co-develop Host Railway processes / procedures and monitor performance against objectives. 
  • Have specialist expertise in the management of adjacent railways. 
  • Developing and managing effective relationships and communications with CN, CPKC, VI Rail and exo. 
  • Attending meetings with CN, CPKC, VI Rail and exo to discuss coordination of design and construction activities. 
  • Develop a streamlined process to address concerns or conflict efficiently to adhere to the Project’s construction budget and schedule. 
  • Early coordination of issues with DPJV Deputy Program Delivery Director, Planning & Design Director and Rail Operations & Maintenance Director teams to mitigate future conflicts. 
  • Champions the creation of a work environment, supported by leadership, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction on the project or program. 
  • Take personal responsibility to ensure your own and others’ health and safety – including those who may be affected by the delivery of this role. 
  • Co‐operate in all matters relating to health, safety and environment, including following safe working procedures at all times and not deviating from agreed safe system of work. 
  • Advocate, promote and engage Bechtel’s health, safety and environmental policies and initiatives. 

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university and 10+ years of professional experience or a minimum of 14+ years of relevant experience working in the large-scale rail infrastructure projects. 
  • Extensive experience of coordinating and interfacing with VI Rail and exo, with CN and CPKC freight companies desirable. 

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge and understanding of stakeholder management and railroad coordination. 
  • A firm understanding of project construction procedures, principles and concepts. 
  • Evidence of direct experience in managing and executing rail projects. 
  • Broad knowledge of precedents in the rail industry. 
  • Ability to prepare clear strategic planning procedures and user-friendly templates to assist entities in undertaking forward, strategic planning. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Design Suite software programs and have the ability to prepare reports. 
  • Willingness to mentor others. 
  • Acknowledge and value contribution from other team members.

Essential Behavioural Skills: 

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills, be a team player and have a knowledge sharing approach. 
  • Will have consultancy experience. 
  • Ability to solve problems by thinking laterally and be able to understand the needs and requirements of the client, and entities – in order to provide planning / design / feasibility solutions in a multi -disciplinary / multi - sectional context. 
  • Must be able to work within a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team and manage challenging multi-cultural relationships across a range of entities. 
  • Must be self-driven and able to plan and execute work without direct supervision from senior management and/or peers. 
  • Must be flexible and adapt to working in a demanding PMO environment, including the need to travel and work remotely if / when required.
