Project Overview:
Bechtel is seeking to recruit high quality project delivery professionals in Engineering, Construction, Project Controls and related disciplines to join our team in Canada.
Bechtel is currently growing our team working on a variety of new transportation and infrastructure projects in the Provinces of Quebec and Ontario, Canada. Candidates are currently being sought in both Montreal, Quebec and Toronto, Ontario.
Job Summary:
The Health and Safety Lead is an integral member of the Team and is responsible for providing support to the Project Health, Safety and Security Manager, leading the local Ontario based project team, developing/implementing safety and health management systems, and fostering a strong project ES&H culture.
This job opportunity may be conditional, based upon the award of new projects and additional scope. Interview will occur from the corporate office in the United States in English. #LI-VB1
Major Responsibilities:
- Coordinates a wide variety of Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) disciplines to facilitate implementation of the Project’s ES&H program and ES&H Management System, including aiding compliance with the Project’s ES&H standards, applicable regulatory requirements, and contractual commitments
- Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of programs, systems, and procedures necessary for the safety and health of employees and protection of the environment and communities
- Ensures maintenance of ES&H databases, inclusive of incident events, audit/assessment findings, and corrective actions
- Performs statistical analysis of ES&H data to identify performance trends and contributing factors as part of continuous improvement and makes recommendations accordingly
- Identifies and supports implementation of unique software systems and electronic innovation used by ES&H personnel
- Leads teams in conducting risk assessment, studies, mitigation planning, and monitoring in response to ES&H issues
- Prepares communications, writes reports, and prepares documents for program execution and records retention
- Coordinates incident notifications, leads investigations, and prepares incident investigation reports
- Recommends and implements improvements in processes, procedures, and work activities to minimize hazard potential
- Leads employee training, emergency preparedness, and quality assurance programs
- Leads coordination of ES&H recognition programs
- Researches moderately complex issues and provides regulatory interpretation and technical advice
- Works with the Project Health, Safety and Security Manager, Project Director, GBU ES&H Manager and Legal on addressing and resolving pending agency non-compliances, notices of violations, potential fines, and other enforcement actions.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree (or international equivalent) related to occupational safety or health and 10-13 years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience
- Extensive experience in supporting large, complex infrastructure construction projects in Canada
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to provide repeatable and innovative solutions to safety and health related challenges.
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with key members of the Project Management Team and the various Project Directors
- In-depth knowledge of Provincial (Ontario) and Canadian laws/regulations, extensive rail construction experience, and best management practices for minimizing potential safety and health impacts during project execution.
- Excellent leadership skills to act as a role model, promoting a positive influence on the work of others through demonstration of collaboration, technical expertise and effective interpersonal skills.
- Advanced knowledge of environmental, safety and health, or related disciplines and application methodologies in the engineering and construction industry.
- Ability to establish collaborative and effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Industry certification through an organization accredited for credentialing ES&H practitioners (e.g., CSP, CRSP, CMIOSH, etc.)
