Senior Planner, Keeyask

JOB SUMMARY:  Bechtel’s work on one of the largest hydroelectric projects in North America today harnesses the power of one of Canada’s great river systems.  In 2014, the Bechtel-led BBE Hydro Constructors Limited Partnership began laying the groundwork for this new 695-megawatt powerhouse. As the centerpiece of the Keeyask Generation and Infrastructure Project, its seven turbine units will provide enough renewable energy to power 400,000 homes.  BBE is formed of Bechtel Canada in partnership with Montana-based Barnard Construction Company and Canadian contractor EllisDon. The Keeyask project involves massive cast-in-place concrete structures—chiefly a spillway and the powerhouse structure—totaling more than 345,000 cubic yards (330,000 cubic meters).

BBE’s work also includes about 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometers) of earth-filled dams and 14 miles (23 kilometers) of earthen dikes. The consortium is currently constructing cofferdams that will be pumped out to create dry work areas for the powerhouse, the spillway, and other structures


 The projects senior planner is responsible to schedule development, maintenance, and monitoring activities. Supports project organizational and administrative activities when delegated. Supervises planning/scheduling activities when delegated. Ensures work is completed as scheduled. Identifies schedule-associated cost trends for management attention.  This position is currently projected through May 2020. 



  • Ascertains that the correct scope of work is reflected on all schedules.
  • Integrates inter-discipline schedule requirements and constraints to establish logical work sequences for assigned disciplines or specialties. Works with the performing organizations and units to coordinate work sequences with the total project plan.
  • Establishes and implements methods for determining activity durations within assigned disciplines or specialties. 
  • Develops quantity release or installation curves for assigned disciplines or specialties. Reviews and evaluates quantity records to ensure total quantities are represented for a particular discipline or specialty. Develops required jobhour expenditure for assigned disciplines or specialties. Assists in determining leveling decisions. Performs quantity, manpower, and cost resource loading for assigned schedules. Performs invoice preparation for payments based on cost loaded schedules as required.  Performs performance monitoring and control functions.
  • Reviews schedule data, and identifies and acquires the information needed to complete work logics to interface between assigned disciplines or specialties. Assists in developing specific project codes of accounts and work breakdown structures, and recommends appropriate modifications and revisions.
  • Determines critical-path activities for assigned discipline or specialties, and identifies significant activities supporting interdisciplinary requirements. Identifies critical path for discipline or specialty work activities.
  • Develops and monitors short term (2-4 week) engineering and/or construction schedules.
  • Independently supports overall planning & schedule development, analysis and reporting efforts.



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or related field and six (6) years of project controls or scheduling/planning related work experience.  In lieu of Bachelor’s degree nine (9) years of project controls work experience in the construction industry.

  • Experience in performing, monitoring, and reviewing planning and scheduling functions, which include schedule development, control, and analysis.

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency with PC operating systems, with proficiency in several basic software applications.  Proficiency with multiple discipline specific software applications currently used in Bechtel (Primavera P6).
  • Intermediate level of knowledge of engineering, procurement, contracts, construction, and startup work processes, as performed by Bechtel.
  • Knowledge of engineering and construction management customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience.


The ideal candidate will have the right to live and work in Canada and current or previous experience with Bechtel work processes related to cost.  External hires will be hired via Bantrel.



This position is located in Thompson, Canada and employees are housed in a modern work camp.  All meals and lodging are provided along with amenities like a gym and movie theatre.  Employees work 21 days on and have 10 consecutive days off.  This is a remote wilderness location, so all transportation is arranged by our travel group in the Winnipeg location including busing and air travel.
