We are seeking a highly motivated Workplace Relations Manager to join the Delivery Partner on the Western Sydney Airport Project. This dynamic individual will be responsible for the day to day oversight of all aspects of industrial and workplace relations on the WSA Project, with specific responsibility for Bechtel’s workplace relations strategy in support of WSA Co. and the Principal Contractor’s.


About role:

Key responsibilities and duties of the Workplace Relations Manager include:

  • Assure compliance with project requirements through regular engagement, audit, and surveillance activities.
  • Fostering achievement of, and regular reporting against, project workforce initiatives targets to WSA Co.  
  • Preparing the strategy for compliance to workforce initiatives across the project.
  • Prepare and issue the monthly workforce initiatives and workplace relations performance report as an attachment to the Bechtel monthly report.
  • Collaborate with the Principal Contractor’s on the development, issuing, acceptance and ongoing compliance with their Workforce Development Engagement Plans and Workforce Initiative and Indigenous Participation plans.
  • Foster positive working culture to minimise disruption due to workplace relations issues.
  • Promote proactive and efficient work practices across the project.
  • Ensure compliance with NSW and Commonwealth requirements with regards to workplace relations across the project.
  • Ensure WSA Co. and other key stakeholders are informed of issues and trends, including industrial action, or potential issues that may affect the Principal Contractor performance on the works.
  • Provide advice and recommendations to WSA Co. on actions in response to workplace relations issues arising on the project and from external issues that may impact on the project.
  • Review and support Principal Contractor development of their Workplace Relations Management Plans.
  • Provide oversight on the Project with the ongoing compliance with The Building Code and applicable WHS and Workplace legislation; and
  • Develop and maintain the Bechtel Workplace Relations Management Plan, Workforce Development Plan, and Indigenous Participation Plan for approval by WSA Co.


What you bring:

 The Workplace Relations Manager shall be knowledgeable and/or experienced in:

  • Major project construction employee / industrial relations in a unionised environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations or other relevant discipline from an accredited university will be highly regarded.
  • Previous experience in a similar role is essential.
  • Onsite construction industry experience is essential.
  • Working knowledge of Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth), Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (NSW) Building Construction industry (Improving Productivity) Act 2016 and The Code for Tendering and Performance of Building Work 2016;
  • Strong influencing skills.
  • Ability to liaise at all levels of management and provide support and advice in the interpretation and application of workplace laws; and
  • Interpersonal skills and able to interact closely with client and contractors while maintaining necessary levels of commercial awareness.


G27: Bachelor’s Degree in Human resources, Industrial Relations or related field with 13+ years of related work experience. In lieu of Bachelor’s degree 19 years of employee / industrial relations experience.
