Bechtel, a global leader in project management, engineering, procurement and construction, has been selected by WSA Co as its Delivery Partner and Project Manager (Definition) for the Western Sydney Airport, a $5.3 billion greenfield facility in Badgerys Creek, New South Wales. Job Summary

The Planner is responsible for schedule development, maintenance, and monitoring activities. Supports project organizational and administrative activities when delegated. Supervises planning/scheduling activities when delegated. Ensures work is completed as scheduled. Identifies schedule-associated cost trends for management attention.


Work Location:  Liverpool, South-Western Sydney Area, Australia.

Job duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists in preparing schedule data for proposals or contract negotiations.
  • Applies knowledge of airport and building projects to develop schedules.
  • Integrates interdisciplinary schedule requirements and constraints to establish logical work sequences for assigned disciplines or specialties. Works with the contractors and others to coordinate work sequences with the total project plan.
  • Works with the Contractors and others to develop quantity release and/or installation curves for assigned contract packages or specialties. Reviews and evaluates quantity records to ensure total quantities are represented for a particular contractor or specialty. Where required, develops required job hour expenditure for assigned packages or specialties. Assists the contractors in determining leveling decisions. Performs quantity, manpower, and cost resource loading for assigned schedules. Performs contractor invoice review for payments based on cost & resource loaded schedules as required.  Performs performance monitoring and control functions.
  • Reviews schedule data and identifies and acquires the information needed to complete work logics to interface between assigned contractors or specialties. Assists in developing specific project codes of accounts and work breakdown structures and recommends appropriate modifications and revisions.
  • Determines critical-path activities for assigned contractors or specialties, and identifies significant activities supporting interdisciplinary requirements. Identifies critical path for contractor or specialty work activities.
  • Works with the contractors to develop and monitor their short term (2-4 week) engineering and/or construction schedules. Writes the schedule commentary that appears in the monthly progress and similar reports.
  • Monitors schedule deviation for assigned contractors or specialties including contractor submittals and recommends corrective action/workaround solutions for project considerations.
  • Identifies and reports activities that have a critical or potential impact on the schedule and prepares and presents the CIAR for the contract package.


Job Qualification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or related field with 6-9 years of project controls or cost related work experience.  In lieu of degree 12-15 years of project controls or cost control experience.
  • Experience in performing, monitoring, and reviewing planning and scheduling functions, which include schedule development, control, and analysis, in the field and the home office.
  • Experience with development and construction of major civil and building projects. Specific airport experience would be an advantage in the Australian market.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication.
  • Proficiency in using PC operating systems and several basic software applications. Proficiency in using multiple discipline-specific software applications currently used by Bechtel (e.g., Ecosys, Primavera, and Microsoft Project).
  • Intermediate level of knowledge of engineering, procurement, contracts, construction, and startup work processes, as performed by Bechtel.
  • Knowledge of engineering and construction management customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience.
  • Must be authorized to work in Australia without sponsorship.
