Bechtel is seeking Lead Project Engineer - Baggage Handling for the Western Sydney Airport Project located in Sydney, Australia. 

 

The Lead Project Engineer - Baggage Handling is responsible for planning, coordinating and directing activities and has technical accountability for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating the engineering work for the Baggage Handling System. The Lead Project Engineer - Baggage Handling works within an integrated client project management team and is accountable for the timely delivery of the design work packages developed by 3rd Party engineering consultants and/or design firms. Assists the management of contractor procurement process, including the formation and assembly of tender documents. Reports to the Lead Project Engineer and ensures the designers deliver to the Project schedule. Receives operational supervision from the Lead Project Engineer.

 

Responsibilities

  • Directs and provides technical and administrative guidance to assigned Project, discipline and consultant Engineers in the management of engineering on the project.
  • Keeps informed on the status of project issues involving assigned personnel with respect to schedule, budget, work quality and client satisfaction, and contributes leadership, experience and expertise in the solution of difficult problems.
  • Reports to the Lead Project Engineer and Project Manager on Engineering performance on cost, progress, performance, risk and technical issues.
  • Coordinates, facilitates and manages interfaces both internal and external.
  • Manages and monitors 3rd Party designer’s performance with relation to schedule and cost control.
  • Coordinates review and client acceptance of 3rd Party produced design documents;
  • Coordinates supply of technical information to the designer to allow the programme to progress.
  • Inputs to and has responsibility for engineering elements of a project capital estimate (proposals and execution) quantities and budgets.
  • Reviews major changes or deviations in project scope, project material quantities, budget or schedule, and assists particularly with defining the change, obtaining accurate estimates of the hours involved, and recommending budget adjustment.
  • Participates in project planning prior to proposals to provide technical guidance in the engineering and construction review of proposals.
  • Monitors the use of available engineering computer programs, technical advances and engineering management control techniques on the projects assigned.
  • Champions the creation of a work environment, supported by leadership, which fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction on the project or program.

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • A recognized degree in engineering from an accredited college or university, specialized courses in relevant general engineering, or an appropriate engineering discipline.
  • A professional license in an engineering discipline or a license to practice architecture from a recognized licensing board is preferred.
  • Must have strong aviation industry experience, experience in Australia preferred;
  • Must have strong Baggage Handling System specific experience; 
  • Experience managing engineering design efforts including management of 3rd Party designers or engineers with a minimum of 5 aviation projects.
  • Broad knowledge of aviation industry/regulatory codes and standards, project controls and design criteria in all engineering disciplines.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and materials and applications of building information modelling, 3-D computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) to engineering problems.
  • Proficient knowledge of activities and operations in other functions including procurement, construction, environmental safety and health (ES&H), and quality assurance.
  • Extensive progressive work experience, including supervision, preferably in the project and staff design engineering or architectural design or other relevant types of engineering such as systems startup, field engineering or engineering/construction firms.
