Job Summary:

In this role, you will lead a team to plan and execute survey and meteorology strategy, survey scanning, and drone pilot programs. You will supervise survey activities, subcontractors, field verification of materials, and daily data downloading and processing. Your leadership will ensure successful implementation of survey work with a project’s safety, quality, and environmental programs.

Major Responsibilities:

As one of the leaders of the Bechtel Corporate Survey Team, the Central Office Support, Lead Surveyor’s duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Establish and manage Bechtel Survey’s Central Survey Office support team’s program and operations, which includes but is not limited to the following, Machine Control Field and Office Support and Training; Stakeless Piling Field and Office Support and Training; Central Office Surveyor, Office Support and Training
  • Develop the department standards for all the above, including safety and quality standards
  • Contribute to the on-going development of Bechtel’s Standard Work Process Procedures for Machine Control, Stakeless Piling and other Office Surveyor activities
  • Contribute to the creation and implementation of a training program that will enable existing Bechtel Survey talent to self-perform Machine Control and Stakeless Piling activities, including processing and modeling data and creation of deliverables
  • Participate and contribute to the Metrology Team’s growth and operations
  • Participate and contribute to the 3D Laser Scanning Team’s growth and operations, including processing/modeling of the scan data, and associated deliverables
  • Provide support to the Corporate Survey Operations Manager with budget, staffing, equipment and software requirements, audits, and training, etc., and assists with the implementation of current and future survey technology throughout the enterprise.
  • Prepare proposals and execution plans for self-perform survey technology operations
  • Review proposals and qualifications of subcontract service providers as required
  • Provide Machine Control and Stakeless Piling services and/or support to projects as required, including processing/modeling of design and as-built data, and associated deliverables
  • Perform and/or supervise Survey field and office work, including UAV/Drone flights
     

Education and Experience Requirements:

Engineering/Technical degree and 9 years’ experience in heavy industrial construction surveying, involving a mix of field and office duties with modern instruments and software, and with modern machine control hardware and software experience, with at least 5 years in supervisorial capacity or (in lieu of a degree), 15 years’ experience heavy industrial construction surveying, involving a mix of field and office duties with modern instruments and software and with modern machine control hardware and software, with at least 5 years in supervisorial capacity

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of engineering and construction methods and processes customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience
  • Knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Incidents” safety program. Must have a strong drive toward Safety, both on and off the job, a commitment to seeing everyone go home each day as well and healthy as they came to work that day
  • Knowledge of Bechtel quality standards. Must have a solid record of successful project completion with little to zero rework
  • Knowledge of construction survey principles
  • Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to machine control and heavy industrial construction surveying field & office activities 
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Survey CAD software, including generation of Digital Terrain Models (DTM), volumes computations, construction layout and as-built computations and drafting
  • Demonstrated proficiency with 3D survey/engineering software including AutoCAD Civil 3D; StarNet Network Least Squares Adjustment Software; Trimble Business Center; Tekla Structural Design Software
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based environment, able to formulate a working relationship with construction management teams, survey team members, other departments, and contractors
  • Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written skills to communicate with team in preparation of reports, memos, calculations and other documentation; displays effective communications skills crucial to motivating team members and presenting plans in a clear and concise manner
  • Demonstrated proficiency utilizing MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and Teams
  • Excellent problem-solving ability
  • General awareness of environmental laws
  • Awareness of government compliance standards
  • Must have the right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship
  • Should be willing and can travel to and remain at jobsites in the United States and overseas on short and long-term assignments

Preferred Skills:

  • Prior Lead Surveyor experience on Bechtel projects 
  • Working knowledge of Bechtel construction procedures
  • Possess and maintain current a FAA Part 107 Remote Pilots’ License
  • Demonstrated experience as a UAV/Drone pilot
  • Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to 3D laser scanning field & office activities; experience with Cyclone or similar scan data processing software a plus
  • Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to metrology field & office activities a plus
  • Familiar with MicroStation V8i with Geo Pak
  • Experience managing technical services subcontracts is desirable 
  • Bilingual: Spanish & English
  • Awareness of government compliance standards
  • Familiarity with current industry quality standards.
