Bechtel is seeking a Senior Geologist for the team based in Santiago, Chile. This role is responsible for leading and supporting engineering geology activities (site investigations, geologic and engineering studies/rock mechanics/engineering geology) for multiple Mining & Metals studies/proposals/projects, which include copper concentrators, aluminum smelters, and other mineral/metal processing facilites. The successful candidate may also be asked to support projects executed by the Infrastructure GBU (rail, airports, fossil and renewable power), Oil, Gas & Chemicals GBU (LNG facilities, oil refineries, and other chemical facilities), and Nuclear, Security & Environmental GBU (nuclear power, government services). The position will be part of the Geotechnical & Hydraulic Engineering Services (G&HES) group.

 

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop geotechnical/geological investigation plans for industrial facilities and subsequently supervise field investigations.
  • Evaluate sites for potential geohazards (rockfalls/slides, seismic ground movement, seismogenic and non-seismogenic faulting, karst ground, voids/cavities, etc.).
  • Evaluate stability requirements for rock excavations.
  • Provide technical support on tunneling construction and conceptual design.
  • Provide recommendations for geophysical surveys related to site investigation objectives.
  • Provide expertise on active fault characterization.
  • Develop and update design guides and specifications.
  • Conduct constructability assessments and geohazard safety issues.
  • Review geotechnical subcontractor's reports and prepare comments and recommendations.
  • Prepare geotechnical design basis reports.
  • Prepare construction completion reports involving geological and/or geotechnical input.
  • Design supporting or retaining structures for general rock slopes and excavations.
  • Define bearing capacity and deformation models for shallow foundations on rock.
  • Define strength and deformation parameters to be used in rock mechanics analysis.
  • Plan, coordinate and prepare specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations for subsurface exploration and material subcontractors.
  • Coordinate work between specialty and other engineering groups or disciplines, the client, suppliers, contractors and other divisional groups.
  • Review quantity estimates and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders.
  • Work will require travel to project sites on short- and long-term assignments.  Travel may also be required to other Bechtel offices and job sites in and outside of Latin America.
  • Field work may be required in challenging locations (e.g. extreme weather conditions and remote locations).

 

 

Basic Qualifications

  • An M.S. degree in Engineering Geology or Geological Engineering, with a minimum of 10 years of working experience in that field, site and office, or a person with a Ph.D. in Engineering Geology or Geological Engineering and minimum 5 years of experience, site and office, is needed. or; 
  • Professional registration is required.
  • Proficiency with computer applications such as (or equivalent to) Rocscience suite of software, Modflow, Global Mapper, and finite-element modeling of rock excavations.
  • Proven skills in engineering geology, site investigation, geological mapping, geophysics, rock mechanics / rock engineering, geohazards and hydrogeology.
  • Must demonstrate strong verbal and written skills in English and Spanish to communicate with team in preparation of reports, memos, calculations, specifications and other forms of documentation. Must be familiar with word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.

 

Salary will be based on current market rates and the posted grade will not be adjusted to suit the successful candidate.
