Project Overview:
Mining and Metals:
Increasing production of critical minerals provides key components of clean energy technologies, from wind turbines to batteries. This shift to clean energy—and the need for commodities—is critical to underpinning the energy transition. At Bechtel, our teams extract these vital resources to support net zero in a way which is more sustainable than ever before.
Job Summary:
For this position, the candidate will be required to have a strong background in piping design and multidisciplinary 3D plant modeling, preferably using S3D.
As a PD&P Piping Designer, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining 3D piping models, routing piping systems, and producing piping layouts in accordance with project specifications, applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices. You will work closely with process, mechanical, civil/structural, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines to ensure effective integration of piping systems within the overall plant design.
The role requires proficiency in 3D design tools and a thorough understanding of Piping/Layout design principles, including equipment interfaces, piping supports, accessibility, operability, maintainability, and constructability requirements. The successful candidate will be capable of generating and extracting accurate 2D orthographic drawings, piping isometrics, and other deliverables directly from the 3D model while working under minimal supervision.
Major Responsibilities:
- Developing detailed 3D piping models and layouts for industrial and mining projects.
- Creating and optimizing equipment, piping, and plant layouts to ensure safe, operable, maintainable, and constructible designs
- Routing piping systems considering process requirements, stress considerations, accessibility, operability, maintenance clearances, and safety requirements.
- Verifying equipment access, maintenance envelopes, lifting requirements, and operational clearances.
- Performing clash detection and resolving design conflicts with other disciplines.
- Extracting piping isometrics, orthographic drawings, and piping & general arrangement drawings from the 3D model.
- Coordinating with engineers, designers, and other project stakeholders to ensure design quality and consistency.
- Incorporating vendor information and ensuring proper integration of equipment and piping systems.
- Supporting constructability, operability, and maintainability reviews throughout the project lifecycle.
- Participating in multidisciplinary design reviews, HAZOPs, constructability reviews, and client model reviews as required.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires Technical Degree or Diploma in Industrial Design, Mechanical Design, Engineering Design Technology, or a related discipline. Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in piping design and multidisciplinary 3D plant modeling, or 12-14 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Extensive experience in piping and layout design for mining and mineral processing facilities.
- Proficiency in the use of 3D plant layout and piping design software, preferably S3D.
- Proficiency in 3D modeling and 2D drafting tools for the development of piping and plant layout deliverables.
- Intermediate English communication skills, both written and verbal, are desirable.
