Position Summary

Bechtel is seeking a Mechanical Designer for the Mining & Metals team, based in Chile. The position will be responsible for planning and conducting independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of design on a project. Knows applicable industry standards and codes, accepted design practices and quality standards for a global business unit.



The Mechanical Designer is principally responsible for:

  • Works in the preparation of Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams. Supported by a supervisor.

  • Keeps direct coordination with engineers and senior designers in the Mechanical discipline.

  • Ensures compliance with approved design standards in own work and by those assigned, to provide quality design.

  • Reviews drawings for quality, accuracy, neatness, functionality and satisfactory completion.

  • Works with designers to coordinate overall design and technical requirements.

  • Participates in and fosters a work environment that is based upon openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.

  • Ensure the data quality in the database of SmartPlant P&ID. Not only the graphic information in the drawings but also the data entered into the software that are not visible in the drawings.

  • Prepare and assists in the preparation of lists of equipment and components obtained from SmartPlant P&ID.


Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications

The Mechanical Designer shall be knowledgeable and/or experienced in:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or scientific discipline, AND Specialized courses in drafting, design, and engineering practices, OR Extensive experience in design and drafting. 


Additional Qualifications

  • Knowledge of equipment and material fabrication sequencing.

  • Knowledge of the application of engineering and construction materials related to the discipline’s design responsibilities.

  • Knowledge of Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), industry and regulatory standards, design criteria and codes relevant to the discipline.

  • Knowledge of discipline Design Guides, mathematical formulae and design calculations used in the discipline.

  • Knowledge of technical responsibilities of other groups associated with the total design effort.

  • Knowledge of procedures used for the procurement and quantity control of bulk materials applicable to the discipline.

  • Knowledge of BSAPs applicable to the specific discipline work.

  • Knowledge in SmartPlant P&ID software.

  • Management of database in SmartPlant P&ID.


Additional Qualifications:

  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

  • Previous Bechtel experience is desirable, minimum 1 year.

  • English level, basic.
