Position Summary

Bechtel is seeking a Copper Center of Excellence Manager for the Mining & Metals team, based in Chile. Position will be responsible for organizing and coordinating activities within mineral processing and metallurgy disciplines of the global business unit and serves as a link between the General Manager in the region, the Manager of Technology, and other members of the CoE team. The ideal candidate will be a well-connected industry individual focused on winning work and fostering client relations to effectively define scope, technical solutions, and enhancements to new and existing plant designs and operations.  This position will also provide technical guidance across projects throughout the project lifecycle, while continuing to monitor industry trends and the appliance of new technologies.

 

Responsibilities

The Copper Center of Excellence Manager is principally responsible for:

  • Manages process engineering activities within the center of excellence and maintains the technical standards. These include flowsheets, process descriptions, process design criteria and operating cost estimates.
  • Acts independent on technical related matters – in design phase and in construction/start-up.
  • Provides technical expertise/support to project and study teams to ensure consistently in work quality.
  • Establishes training and development plans for engineers and specialists. Holds career plan discussions.
  • Maintains the center of excellence budget and control of any overhead activities.
  • Participate in study and project staffing plans.
  • Participates and contributes inputs to capital cost estimates.
  • Reviews and participation in unusual or complex problems, providing technical guidance to proposed solutions.
  • Maintains knowledge of new developments in the discipline through technical literature, interaction with clients and vendors.
  • Maintains knowledge link both internally and externally.
  • Approves any requested changes to design guidelines and standard specifications.
  • Foster an openness, teamwork, communicative, empowering and innovative environment for co-workers.
  • Maintains continuous contact with work in progress by reviewing, approving various design documents and drawings, design concepts and technical specifications.
  • Audits implementation and compliance with a project’s Execution Plan, Project Procedures Manual, and with Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs).
  • Reviews and approves project Design Control Check List (DCCL) and Design Review Notices (DRNs).

 

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications

The Copper Center of Excellence Manager shall be knowledgeable and/or experienced in:

  • A recognized degree in mineral processing or metallurgy, from an accredited college or university, AND
  • Extensive work experience in the minerals industry with both operational and design knowledge including testwork, process design, project execution, plant operations and construction/commissioning.

 

Additional Qualifications

  • Connected to professional organizations in mineral processing.
  • Strong external connection and ability to shape and enhance front end efforts of studies and projects.
  • Minimum of twenty years’ experience in mineral processing with design and operations knowledge.
  • Strong industry connections across mining customer contacts, technology providers and equipment vendors.
  • Knowledge of best practices within mineral processing and metallurgy.
  • Knowledge of corporate and global business unit activities and design criteria used in the discipline.
  • Knowledge of practices and procedures for project controls, construction, quality, environmental safety and health.
  • Knowledge of capital and operating cost development.
  • Ability to make technical presentation internally and externally with customers and others.
  • Strong business case awareness including economic assessments and evaluations.
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to influence technical solutions.
  • Skills in written communications.
