Provide computational, technical writing, and licensing support for the development of earthquake design parameters for a wide range of projects and project structures and facilities under the applicable regulatory requirements. Familiar with probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA). Emphasis is on characterization of design ground motions/loads for seismic design input from a geoscience and geotechnical engineering perspective, rather than from a structural/civil design perspective.  Contribute to memos, calculations, and reports developing deterministic and probabilistic estimates of seismic design parameters. In addition, support engineering geology, geotechnical, and geophysical investigations, as needed. Actively participate in technical excellence activities, such as writing and presenting technical papers for peer-reviewed publications and conferences, participating in code committees, etc. This position will be based in Oakland, California.

Basic Requirements:


·         M.S. degree in the Geosciences.

·         Five (5) years of experiece in the field of Seismology.

·         Familiarity with theory and application of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA), including earthquake catalog development and processing, seismic source modeling, identification of appropriate ground motion prediction equations, and consideration of aleatory and epistemic uncertainties.

·         Familiarity with the acquisition and processing of earthquake time histories for subsequent input soil response and structural analyses including time history matching.

·         Familiarity with applicable codes, standards, and regulations for characterization of seismic design input.

·         Familiarity with various geophysical survey techniques and experience with specifications for performing or subcontracting geophysical survey work for subsurface investigations.

·         Must demonstrate excellent verbal and writing skills to communicate with team in preparation of reports, memos, calculations and other documentation.

·         Must be proficient with word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.

·         Should have programming experience in MATLAB, Mathcad, Fortran, Visual Basic, and/or C++.

·         Should be able to work effectively on teams whose members reside in several distributed offices and whose interaction is most frequently by phone or email.

·         Willingness and ability to travel to and remain at jobsites in the U.S. and overseas on generally short-term assignments.

·         Legal right to work and remain in the U.S. without sponsorship.




·         Master or Ph.D. in the Geosciences or Geotechnical/Earthquake Engineering

·         Seven (7) years industry experience with assessment of earthquake ground motions for design input preferred.

·         Has written and presented science and industry technical papers at professional meetings.

·         Has prepared license application documents and supporting calculations for commercial nuclear power plants, including familiarity with NQA-1 quality of data/software validation and analysis reporting procedures.

·         Experience with preparation for, and interaction during, technical meetings with expert consultants and regulatory personnel.

·         Familiarity with soil column amplification factor analysis, including experience with linear and equivalent-linear computer programs.

          Familiarity with seismic margin analysis (SMA) and seismic probabilistic risk analysis (SPRA).
