Position Overview:

Assigned to the Construction organization as the Office Surveyor / Survey Cad Specialist is responsible for providing survey computations and drafting support as required to the construction team. The Office Surveyor / Survey Cad Specialist reports directly to the Project Lead Survey Engineer (LSE). The Office Surveyor/Survey Cad Specialist interprets design drawings and specifications to determine associated commodities and equipment locations and provides direction and supervision to assigned field survey teams in support of the civil, structural, mechanical and piping installations in the work area.


Position Duties/Responsibilities

The Office Surveyor / Survey Cad Specialist duties include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Execute the responsibilities of the LSE in his/her absence
  • Assist the LSE with oversight of all survey operations and with providing technical direction to the direct-hire survey team
  • Assist the LSE with the survey team’s implementation of the project safety, quality and environmental programs
  • Responsible for the administration of the Survey Work Request program
  • Ensures that survey office calculations activity execution supports construction schedule.
  • Develop and maintain survey data
  • Review and approve survey data from field crews and ensure survey documentation is completed accurately and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Provide office technical support to the survey team including processing of survey data and preparation of deliverables utilizing survey industry best practices
  • Support with the Verification of the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary control points
  • Review Survey Control field work and perform accurate network least squares adjustments.
  • Identifying the location of underground services and maintaining a drawing with as-built underground installations to support excavation permitting process.
  • Overall office quality and integrity of the surveying program.
  • Support the supervision of the 3D Laser Scanning operations, including reality capture and processing of scan data
  • Prepare survey CAD drawings as required in the performance of duties, including generation of Digital Terrain Models (DTM) and volumes computations
  • Provide Civil project completion data and documentation including "As-Built" records
  • Perform Calibration Baseline checks of survey instruments
  • Providing direction and training to less experienced survey team members
  • In the initial phase of the assignment to the project, the Office Surveyor will also function as a party chief responsible for supervising a field survey crew, or as a member of a field crew.


Basic Qualifications

  1. Graduate of a Civil Engineering or Land Survey accredited program with 6 years of related experience, or 12 years related experience in lieu of degree
  2. Must be a US citizen
  3. Possess active security clearance or ability to obtain security clearance.
  4. Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check, including verification of employment and education
  5. Must be able to obtain a site security badge
  6. Must be physically capable to participate in project walkdowns, which may require the following activities:  extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, climbing in or maneuvering around very small and/or confined spaces, and lifting up to 40lbs without assistance.
  7. This project may have multiple work schedules that are subject to change and may require employees to work overtime, weekends and/or night shift when a business need arises


Minimum Qualifications

  1. Demonstrated leadership in a team-based environment of both direct hire and subcontracted survey teams.
  2. Self-starter, highly motivated, requiring little supervision, and able to work well in a team environment, on multiple work fronts, with good communication skills.
  3. Multi-Disciplined Field Engineering Survey experience with earthwork, excavation, concrete, structural steel, mechanical, and piping, etc. installation layout and verification. Knowledge of supervisory functions relating to field activities.
  4. Knowledge of engineering and construction methods and processes customarily acquired over time through specialized instruction or practical experience
  5. Demonstrated ability to maintain a safe work ethic and work environment at all times
  6. Knowledge of construction survey principles
  7. Prior Bechtel Survey experience
  8. Demonstrated experience with Survey CAD Software: Trimble Business Center; AutoCAD Civil 3D;
  9. Ability to perform Network Least Squares Adjustment on GNSS and survey control data
  10. Demonstrated experience with 3D Laser Scanning reality capture and scan data processing
  11. Demonstrated experience with Trimble Robotic Total Stations, Digital Levels and GNSS survey systems and Access field software
  12. Experience of recording data for, and performing calculations using Digital Terrain Models (DTM), which includes the necessary CAD software required to support any DTM platforms.
  13. Advanced knowledge of data downloading.
  14. Intermediate level use of Microsoft Word and Excel
  15. Experience working on multiple work fronts
  16. Experience working under time constraints and must be adaptable to changing conditions
  17. Displays effective communications skills
  18. Ability to work with minimal supervision


Preferred Skills

  1. Knowledge of Bechtel’s “Zero Incidents” safety program
  2. Experience with Bentley MicroStation software preferred
  3. Experience with Tekla software
  4. General awareness of environmental laws
  5. Awareness of government compliance standards
  6. Possess a Professional Land Surveyor’s license
