Project Overview:
Bechtel has been involved over the last 80 years in some of the world’s busiest and most complex airport projects, including Greenfield and Brownfield developments. In the GCC, we have held significant roles on King Khalid, King Fahad, Dubai, Hamad, and Muscat international airports. Saudi Arabian Bechtel Company has been appointed to provide project management consultancy services (including technical, commercial, and construction management) for the development of a state of the art international airport in the city of Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
King Salman International Airport will have a capacity of up to 120 million travellers by 2030 and 185 million travellers by 2050, and the capacity to process up to 3.5 million tons of cargo by 2050.
Bechtel will provide PMC services for three new terminals; Terminal 6 is a new build ‘low cost carrier’ – hyper efficient terminal with gross floor area of ≈450,000m2, capacity of 20mppa; Iconic Terminal is a new build ‘new concept’ terminal with gross floor area of ≈ 1M m2, capacity of 40 to 45 mppa, and Private Aviation Terminal and hangars for VIPs and business jet passengers.
Job Summary:
In this role, the geotechnical candidate is expected to work independently and will report to the project’s Field Engineering Manager or their designee. They will also liaise with other geotechnical engineers/engineering geologists assigned to the Project Execution and Design Review Teams and will liaise with Bechtel’s functional geotechnical manager or their designee.
In this role you will plan, coordinate and manage geotechnical investigations and designs for excavations, earthworks, slope stability, retaining systems, foundations, roads, bridges, buildings, and tunnels. You will also provide oversight of field construction activities related to geotechnical engineering for such structures including reviews of construction method statements, field acceptance testing and geological mapping of ground conditions.
Major Responsibilities:
- Responsible for discipline based technical oversight and compliance of contractors, ensuring works are carried out as per the drawings, specifications and standards, as per schedule and ensures compliance to ES&H plans, quality standards and local/national regulatory safety codes
- Plans and prepares, or reviews, scope of works and technical specifications for field investigation works and geotechnical design (structures as described under Job Summary).
- Reviews geotechnical designs including design reports, drawings and construction specifications, provides comments and decides on comment resolutions.
- Coordinates and oversees field and laboratory investigations and reviews of geotechnical reports and designs including reports and drawings.
- Provides office and field oversight of geotechnical engineering and hydraulic and hydrology activities.
- Reviews complex geotechnical analyses and calculations, provides comments and decides on comment resolution.
- Coordinates and interfaces as directed with the day-to-day technical work of personnel
- Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management.
- Interprets new or special regulations, codes, standards, criteria, and performance data.
- Mentors geotechnical engineering personnel by providing on-the-job training for their professional development. Provides input to and participates in special technical educational and training programs as directed.
- Coordinates and monitors interfaces with other contractors, lead the review meetings
Education and Experience Requirements:
- An M.S. degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology with a minimum of 10 years of working experience in the field, or a B.S. in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology and minimum 15 years of experience.
- Professional registration is preferred.
- Demonstrable advanced proficiency in areas provided under Required Knowledge. Should be familiar with geotechnical software (or equivalent) such as Flac, Plaxis, LPILE, Group, Slope/W, etc. Should have hand on experience in execution of geotechnical investigations and geotechnical construction.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Broad based knowledge of geotechnical engineering and rock mechanics.
- Knowledge of subsurface investigation and testing methodology include field and laboratory techniques, factual and interpretative reporting requirements.
- Knowledge of geological mapping requirements for slope excavations, structure and dam foundations, and tunnelling.
- Knowledge of geotechnical design methodologies, construction specifications and field control requirements for type of construction listed under the Job Summary.
- Broad knowledge of processes in field of engineering and field engineering for large scale projects.
- Knowledge of health and safety requirements in large scale construction projects.
- Previous, related, working experience in the middle-east is highly preferred.
