Civil Works JV Metro Operations and Maintenance Training Engineer

The BACS consortium is responsible for the design and build of Lines 1 and 2 of the Riyadh metro network. These two lines will form part of the six-line metro system that will run for a total length of 176 kilometers across the city and includes 85 stations.

The scope of work on Lines 1 and 2 encompasses detailed structural, architectural and transit system design together with construction, testing, and commissioning of works.  Our scope also includes the procurement of all products and materials necessary to support project delivery. We are fully responsible for the design and integration of the transit systems and the civil infrastructure. Working from the Employers Requirements, the BACS consortium will manufacture, furnish, install, test and commission all components related to both the transit systems and the civil infrastructure.


Line 1 stretches from north to south through the centre of Riyadh, along the Olaya-Batha corridor, covering 38 kilometers. The line includes 22 stations and 4 transfer stations where it will connect with other new metro lines.   Much of Line 1 will be underground. Line 2 runs east to west along King Abdullah Road and will be built mostly at grade (15km) with some elevated sections. This line extends more than 25 kilometers with 13 stations and 3 transfer stations.


Job Summary:

  • Reporting to the Civil Works Joint Venture (CWJV) Operations & Training Specialist, the position holder will support a dedicated team who are preparing the system user manuals and training manuals for each of the CWJV asset types (e.g. stations, depots, track, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, Tunnel Ventilation). The Employers Requirement mandates that CWJV shall train and qualify O&M Entity personnel on a ‘train the trainer’ basis.
  • The training will be based on the following key duties that support system availability;

    • Maintain (scheduled maintenance)
    • Diagnose (inspect)
    • Rectify
  • Training will include familiarisation and general training (knowledge) for line-wide infrastructure, stations, depots, stabling, plant, materials and special tools. Training will comprise of both on-site practical training and theoretical classroom activities.
  • The work will require coordination with the other RMP Consortia, subcontractors and equipment suppliers.
  • The work will encompass the compilation of the O&M MEP system user manuals and MEP training courses, particularly relating to the operator of MEP systems.
  • The position holder will support the review process of system user manuals and training manuals submitted by suppliers as a direct input to the above documents prior to submission to the Employer for approval.
  • Provision of on-site training as ‘subject matter expert relating to MEP systems.
  • The position holder will be required to support development and maintenance of all training logistical planning arrangements, including locations, classrooms, available transport, and schedules.
  • The position holder will be required to support other O&M activities within the team as required and possess adaptable, proactive and self-motivated behaviours.   


Position Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible to deliver MEP system user manuals and associated training material, in compliance to the required documentation templates. The position holder should be aware there is a requirement to write the documentation to a high standard and ensure the content is technically correct.   
  • Develop training plans specific for metro stations, Buildings, shafts, portals, tunnelling (line-wide infrastructure) and Depots from the Maintenance Manuals and System User Manuals, as directed.
  • Support delivery of O&M theoretical and practical training courses to O&M keymen, as subject matter expert.
  • Support the review process for MEP training material ensuring comments are responded to and the resubmission of documents in a timely manner.  
  • Carry out observation tests of course attendees, particularly during practical activities ensuring of a traceable audit trail.
  • Provide group and individual feedback and progress reviews as necessary.
  • Support development of a suite of System User Manuals that are required to be provided by CWJV and with a minimum of assistance.
  • Perform and carry out other duties as directed by the CWJV Operations, & Training Specialist.


Key Outputs:

  • The job holder shall support in the preparation of system user manuals (and other documentation as required), training courses, plans and procedures to support the training activities for the Riyadh Metro, including.
  • Prepare the training for station operations, Building Manager, Station Masters, and Line Operators, this will include Theoretical, Practical and Familiarisation training.
  • Support the assessment process for level 1 keymen training of the O&M Entity personnel. Assessment must meet the standard required to undertake the responsibilities to train other staff based on knowledge, skills and behaviours required to undertake responsibilities and perform activities.
  • Must be flexible and willing to support the wider team across all OM&T deliverables, as directed.



  • Excellent knowledge of MEP systems and the interface with maintainer and operator functions.
  • Able to prepare MEP related system user manuals pertaining to the operator.
  • Experience within mainline or metro operations/maintenance relating to MEP, ideally with some exposure to training delivery as subject matter expert.
  • Employer/Stakeholder interface experience and engagement with contractors and subcontractors.
  • Experience of writing O&M documentation to a high standard.
  • Able to manage workloads to deadlines and deliver to a schedule.
  • Experience in a major railway project environment.
  • Excellent organisation skills and self-disciplined to manage own workload.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Must be a highly skilled communicator and able to build rapport easily.
  • Capable of working independently.
  • Highly organised and capable to lead across all administrative support.
  • Excellent I.T skills pertaining to MS Word, PowerPoint.



  • Demonstrable experience of ‘Train the Trainer’ pertaining to the above disciplines.
  • Experience in the practical application of Training Design (development of training courses from O&M Manuals).
