Project Overview:

Bechtel Mining and Metals offers engineering, procurement, and construction services for customers in the mining sector across multiple commodities including Iron Ore, Bauxite, Alumina, Aluminium, Copper, Gold, Coal, Lithium and Rare Earths markets. 

Headquartered in Santiago, Chile, the M&M global business unit also has offices in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide in Australia along with execution units in the United States, Peru, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, India and other project locations around the world.

The Aluminium & Alumina Centre of Excellence is based in Bahrain.

Job Summary:

Independently performs complex professional engineering or scientific assignments in support of our regional customers and various studies/projects.

Provides technical support/input to our regional customers to support/troubleshoot various operational/technical issues encountered within their local facilities. Provides engineering support to our various study/project teams located within various offices globally.

Represents Bechtel in discussions with or presentations to client management or senior technical personnel.  Is recognized and respected within the aluminium industry for expertise in the specialized field and may have a growing reputation with regional customers.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Serves as consultant to global business unit management, project and specialty engineering or scientific groups providing advice and counsel on special and unique assignments.
  • Develops or reviews engineering or scientific concepts, drawings, calculations and specifications.
  • Participates directly in new business efforts involving specialized and unique engineering or scientific applications. Interviews client personnel to determine their needs, develops scope for cost estimates for services, and participates in proposal preparation and presentation.
  • Provides guidance and direction to specialty scientific or engineering personnel in the development of design criteria and design specifications.
  • Screens and recommends selection of special outside consultants; coordinates their activities and monitors their performance.
  • Conducts or leads special studies on economic feasibility and on new technologies, methods and materials.
  • Interprets new or special governmental regulations, engineering codes, standards, criteria and performance data.
  • May assist in developing and coordinating special technical educational and training programs for Bechtel personnel.
  • As assigned, represents Bechtel at professional conferences and on committees.
  • Keeps abreast of technological developments in the respective field and keeps management informed on important new advances.
  • Participates in and fosters a work environment, supported by leadership, that is based upon openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A recognized degree in engineering or scientific discipline from an accredited college or university, OR
  • A professional license in an appropriate discipline from a recognized licensing board, OR
  • Specialized courses in general engineering or an appropriate engineering or scientific discipline, AND
  • Progressive work experience, preferably in staff design engineering, applied science, or specialty engineering but may be in other relevant types of engineering/science including systems start-up, field engineering or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or engineering/construction firms.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge in a specialized field of science or engineering and ability to analyze complex problems and systems.
  • Knowledge of scientific or engineering systems, calculations, applications and construction methods and materials, and engineering or scientific application of computers.
  • Extensive experience in aluminium smelters and/or alumina refineries including study/project delivery, and operational and/or maintenance activities.
  • Is recognized and respected within the industry and among Bechtel clients for their expertise and knowledge.
  • Knowledge of related construction practices and the economics involved.
  • Thorough knowledge of industrial and regulatory standards and design criteria in the engineering or scientific discipline.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
