  • Salary Range: $90,990 - $138,760 annually (Determined by function, education, experience, and qualifications of the applicant. A 15% salary uplift is provided on top of base salary for positions that are worked in New York City or San Francisco, which is subject to change depending on market conditions.).

 

Project Overview:

Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State. The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.

 

The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities – Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory – as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities.

 

This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30a.m. to 5p.m. Selected applicant needs to be able and willing to work weekends as needed.

The Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC) is a limited liability corporation created by Bechtel National Inc. (BNI) and Amentum. WTCC is a subcontractor to BNI, the prime contractor, to deliver the construction, turnover, startup, and commissioning activities for the WTP project.

 

Position Summary:

Bechtel is seeking a Welding Field Engineer for the Waste Treatment Plant at WTCC. The position will be responsible for activities relating to construction engineering within the welding discipline. Duties include interpreting welding design drawings and specifications, field verification of materials, welder testing and heat treat/stress relief, and aiding welding personnel as required. This position is not considered the design authority for the project, but only to enforce welding construction per design.

 

Responsibilities:

The Welding Field Engineer is principally responsible for:

  • Coordinating with engineering on constructability and design issues relating to the welding discipline such as welding code requirements and heat treat/stress relief.
  • Establishing a welding design/field engineering working relationship and lines of communication with the Project Engineer, including agreement on welding engineering deliverables and overall construction application configuration management.
  • Responsible for quantity taking-off, control, tracking, reporting and forecasting for welding discipline.
  • Specifying the welding criteria for construction of temporary construction facilities as required.
  • Directing the preparation of requisitions for field procured materials, material substitution, services and equipment including weld consumables.
  • Approving field requisitions as delegated by the Field Construction Manager.
  • Reviewing material receiving reports and warehousing to assure delivery of correct welding materials.
  • Coordinating and monitoring the interface between the construction automation plan and the project controls program at the jobsite.
  • Developing and managing the welding construction quality program.
  • Directing preparation of cost estimates for welding construction activities and coordinating the preparation of cost reports, forecast and progress reports.
  • Coordinating with Field Supervision and Subcontractors to plan/support construction schedules.
  • Planning and recommending welding procedures to be implemented by Field Supervision to ensure construction operations are within requirements of engineering design and specifications.
  • Working with customer’s resident engineering and operating personnel to coordinate welding construction activities.
  • Coordinating subcontract activities to ensure welding materials, equipment and quality comply with design plans and specifications.
  • Implementing controls over variables affecting welding installation progress such as weld consumables, documentation and welder certification. Also ensuring engineering and procurement provide timely delivery of drawings, materials and equipment and that other corporate programs are fully utilized.
  • Administrating major subcontract changes regarding the welding discipline and representing the company in major contractual discussions and negotiations.
  • Performing other duties as required by Bechtel management.

 

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction, or a related subject from an accredited university and 6+ years of Field Engineering or related experience or, in lieu of a degree, 12+ years of directly related experience.
  • Must possess the right to work and remain in the US without sponsorship.

 

Additional Qualifications:

  • Have a working knowledge of the construction welding operations and installations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H). Demonstrated commitment to a Zero Accident Safety Program.
  • Must be computer-literate in word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
  • Must be familiar with current industry quality standards.
  • Basic ability to utilize the TeamWorks automation suite as the Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
  • Basic knowledge of Project Technical Requests (PTR) for routing and resolving Requests for Information (RFIs), Field Change Documents (FCDs), and Non Conformance/Compliance Reports (NCRs) between project sites, contractors, clients, and home office.
  • Basic knowledge of work packaging and basic ability to manipulate completions module and PunchWorks for interface with the start-up team.
