Project Overview:

Join us as we make history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest.

 

Sitting at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake and Yakima rivers near two mountain ranges, our community provides access to year-round outdoor recreation, 300 days of sun a year, more than 200 wineries within a 50-mile radius, and the amenities of large cities just a three-hour drive (or short flight) to Seattle and Portland.

Job Summary:

This role will originate and check complex structural engineering deliverables, such as steel and concrete calculations, specifications, material requisitions. Reviews and coordinates technical documents with/from other engineering disciplines, procurement, and construction. Prepare technical reports related to specific design issues. Manage specifically assigned project activities. Assist in constructability reviews. Support construction by dispositioning field change requests and nonconformance reports. Act as a mentor or coach for subordinate engineers and designers. Schedule and coordinate off-project review requirements for engineering deliverables. Lead and/or participate in technical discussions with client, suppliers, construction, etc.   

 

Part-Time Telework: This position is a full-time role that offers part-time telework flexibility in the Richland, Washington project office. Upon initial hire and onboarding, the position will require full time presence in the Richland, Washington project office, then may offer part-time telework flexibility. This position works a 9/80 schedule, offering every other Friday off.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of the civil/structural engineering work for a global business unit, a project or staff group to include the preparation of original designs layouts, details, drawings and specifications for structures, building, roadways, railroads, etc. 
  • Participates in the design, development and modification of Civil/Structural components and processes utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs)​ and Design Control Check List (DCCL) and Design Review Notices (DRNs)​ 
  • Designs structures using knowledge of structural analysis, including statics, dynamics, and materials engineering 
  • Determines the appropriate use of various structural elements such as steel, wood, masonry, and concrete to ensure appropriate material is used based on load or stress requirements 
  • Originates and checks structural engineering deliverables, such as steel and concrete calculations, specifications, and material requisitions 
  • Analyzes problems with conflicting design requirements, sketches ideas and possible solutions 
  • Analyzes and reports on the suitability of unconventional materials, techniques and/or difficult coordination requirements 
  • Assists in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs for proposals, forecasts, and change orders 
  • Completes Civil/Structural documentation and procedures for installation and maintenance​ 
  • Provides assistance to project and construction management in identifying and complying with project Civil/Structural requirements and in addressing issues as they arise during project execution

Education and Experience Requirements:

Level I

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in civil/structural engineering (or international equivalent) and 5-8 years of relevant experience or 9-12 years of relevant work experience​

 

Level II

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in civil/structural engineering (or international equivalent) and 8-10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without Bechtel visa sponsorship now or in the future. ​
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.​
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge.)​
  • Non-U.S. citizens from countries identified by the Department of Energy as posing heightened security concerns—including sensitive countries, state sponsors of terrorism, countries of risk, and other designated countries –are subject to additional security requirements that limit site access. 
  • Considered highly skilled and proficient in discipline
  • Seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of area of specialization, resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways
