Project Overview:
Join us as we make history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest.
Sitting at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake and Yakima rivers near two mountain ranges, our community provides access to year-round outdoor recreation, 300 days of sun a year, more than 200 wineries within a 50-mile radius, and the amenities of large cities just a three-hour drive (or short flight) to Seattle and Portland.
Job Summary:
In this role, you will provide technical leadership in the design and development of fire protection systems and equipment. You will lead on-site system evaluations, review and approve contractors’ submittals, attend contract meetings, and assist in determining needed changes and with final testing. Your work will lead the implementation of programs and procedures that promote fire safety.

Major Responsibilities:
Level 1
- Participates in the design, design approvals, and development of Fire Protection systems and equipment including sprinkler, fire pump, fire alarm and mass notification systems in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements
- Participate and approve Fire Hazards Analysis and fire protection assessments
- Analyzes life safety requirements for buildings, including building code compliance, occupancy determination, occupant load calculations and egress analysis
- Performs on-site fire protection system evaluations and assists with final system testing. Performs building and fire code analyses and interpretations
- Provides technical guidance in review of engineering analyses and engineering judgments for alternative fire barrier systems, opening protectives, and penetration firestops
- Participates in pre-award meetings, as appropriate. Attends post-award contract meetings, such as post-award kickoff meetings (PAK), preconstruction conferences, informal or formal partnering meetings, schedule acceptance meeting, design review meetings, weekly progress meetings, and Facility Turnover Planning Meetings
- Visits construction sites to monitor progress and resolve construction issues in a timely manner
- Assists in identifying the need for a modification to scope, cost and/or schedule based on collaboration with the construction contractor, Supported Command, designer of record, PM and/or other entities
- Supports the issuance of requests for proposal by assisting in determining needed changes and writing technical scopes of work
- Participates in implementing programs and procedures to ensure employee and facility safety is in accordance with all OSHA, NFPA and Life Safety Code requirements.
- Maintains current knowledge of all building and fire protection codes and regulations to assure compliance
Level 2
- Designs and develops Fire Protection systems and equipment
- Assists with construction quality assurance by performing code required special inspections or required observations
- Witnesses acceptance testing of the various systems and structures as part of integral facility commissioning process
- Implements programs and procedures to ensure employee and facility safety is in accordance with all OSHA, NFPA and Life Safety Code requirements.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Level 1
- Requires Fire Protection bachelor's degree and 5-8 years of relevant experience in fire protection system design, fire hazard analysis, use of international codes and standards as NFPA, FM, UL, IFC, IBC or 9-12 years of relevant fire protection work experience.
- Required knowledge of international standards as NFPA, FM, UL, IFC, and IBC.
- Preferred PE license in fire protection.
Level 2
- Requires Fire Protection bachelor's degree and 8-10 years of relevant experience in fire protection system design, fire hazard analysis, use of international codes and standards as NFPA, FM, UL, IFC, IBC or 12-14 years of relevant fire protection work experience such as responsibly-in-charge.
- Required knowledge of international standards as NFPA, FM, UL requirements, IFC, and IBC.
- Required PE license in fire protection or ability to obtain license within 1 year.
- Required knowledge of DOE or nuclear fire protection orders and standards and facility fire protection programs.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
- Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge)
- Must possess the right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship.
