Project Overview:

Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington state. The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era. 

 

The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities – Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory – as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities. 

 

The Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC) is a limited liability corporation created by Bechtel National Inc. (BNI) and AECOM. WTCC is a subcontractor to BNI, the prime contractor, to deliver the construction, turnover, startup, and commissioning activities for the WTP project. This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 am to 5:00 pm. Selected applicant needs to be able and willing to work overtime and weekends as needed.   

 

Responsibilities:

  • Plans, develops, monitors, and evaluates industrial hygiene (IH) processes for projects and operating facilities. 
  • Assists projects and operating facilities in developing and implementing IH programs and procedures, collecting IH data (air, surface, liquid and bulk samples), and implementing IH emergency response capabilities. 
  • Identifies and analyzes occupational health hazards and develops control methods to mitigate risk. 
  • Works independently and under minimal supervision to plan and conduct work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of IH techniques, control procedures, and implementing criteria. 
  • Reports to and receives operational direction from the Project S&H Manager. 
  • Maintains contact with project or facility contractor/subcontractor personnel to monitor compliance with IH programs. 
  • Contacts regulatory agencies as required. 
  • Principle responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: Develops and implements IH programs including IH processes, procedures, specifications, and/or training courses. 
  • Assists the Principal Industrial Hygienist in developing and implementing IH policies as necessary.
  • Monitors daily work practices utilized by Bechtel and/or contractors/subcontractors to ensure compliance with established programs, policies, and applicable regulations. 
  • Advises project management of noncompliance and stops work in imminent danger situations. 
  • Recommends acceptable work practices and corrective actions and ensures their implementation.
  • Develops IH training programs and conducts IH training meetings as necessary.
  • Trains and directs subordinate industrial hygienists in sampling and assessment methodologies.
  • Conducts and assists projects with sampling, monitoring, data interpretation and occupational health surveys to ensure compliance with established programs.
  • Remains cognizant of federal, state, local, or host country regulations affecting industrial hygiene. 
  • Ensures dissemination of information on new or revised regulations to supervisory personnel and other employees through verbal and written communications and through revisions to programs.
  • Accompanies regulatory compliance officers/inspectors during project audits to provide technical/operational support relative to compliance with applicable standards.
  • Assists in preparing specific reports as required in accordance with the Bechtel Environmental, Safety & Health Industrial Hygiene manual procedures and associated core processes.
  • Designates controlled/restricted work areas in agreement with policy, regulations and the Bechtel Environmental, Safety & Health Industrial Hygiene manual.
  • Provides input to proposals in the area of industrial hygiene.  

 

Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications:

  • Level One: BS Degree in a specialized scientific field (e.g., occupational safety and health, chemistry, biology, engineering, or other acceptable fields) from an accredited university and 6+ years of progressively responsible construction or related experience. In lieu of a degree, 12+ years of directly related experience.
  • Level Two: BS Degree in a specialized scientific field (e.g., occupational safety and health, chemistry, biology, engineering, or other acceptable fields) from an accredited university and 9+ years of progressively responsible construction or related experience. In lieu of a degree, 15+ years of directly related experience.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
  • Must be able to obtain a DOE badge for access to the Hanford Site. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Technical knowledge of Industrial Hygiene systems, principles, best practices, and calculations and the application of IH methods, standards and materials.
  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory standards and criteria pertinent to Industrial Hygiene.
  • Knowledge of Industrial Hygiene training program materials and methods.
  • Knowledge of problem investigation, regulatory and internal audit practices, and procedures.
  • Proficient in computer applications. 
  • Certification in Comprehensive Practice of Industrial Hygiene through a recognized accrediting organization. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Good oral and written communication skills. 
  • Possess the legal right to work and remain in the US without sponsorship.
  • Pervious WTP, DOE, or DOD experience.
  • Experience in a nuclear, heavy construction, chemical processing, or petroleum environment.
