Nuclear Safety Engineer

Project Overview:

Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive-waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in southeastern Washington State. The project will use vitrification technology to process and stabilize 56 million gallons (212 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford Site which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era. The cleanup project is one of DOE’s most technically challenging and the largest undertaking of its kind—equivalent to building two nuclear power plants. The construction site spans 65 acres (26 hectares) and includes facilities for pretreatment, low-activity waste vitrification, high-level waste vitrification, and the analytical laboratory – as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, and other support facilities. 


Position Summary:

Executes assignments concerned with specialized or unique engineering/scientific requirements. Has technical responsibility for independently interpreting, organizing, and coordinating these assignments. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope and may involve development of novel concepts, approaches, and solutions. 



  • Develops nuclear safety calculations, including radiological and chemical consequence calculations and modeling of fluid flow and heat transfer for aerosol transport and in-facility deposition, explosions, and fires.
  • Develops and interprets design criteria and specifications for most complex systems, processes, structures and equipment in a global business unit.
  • Serves as consultant to engineering management, providing advice and counsel on special engineering assignments.
  • Assists in new business efforts involving specialized engineering applications. Develops preliminary cost estimates and participates in proposal preparation and presentation.
  • Prepares and reviews project controls, cost estimates, and staffing requirements for projects, forecasts and change orders.
  • Provides technical direction and assigns work to subordinate engineers and others who assist on specific assignments. 
  • Reviews and checks work.
  • Coordinates and monitors the work of unique field engineering activities and of specialized outside consultants. 
  • May participate in selection of outside consultants.
  • Conducts or leads special studies on economic feasibility, new technologies, methods, or materials. Interprets new or special governmental regulations engineering codes, standards, criteria and performance data.
  • Participates in the development and coordination of special technical educational and training programs for clients and/or Bechtel  personnel.
  • Assists in the preparation and reviews of project procedures and cost estimates for proposals, forecasts and change orders.

Skills and Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience. In lieu of a degree 9 years of relevant experience.
  • Must be able to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check.
  • Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site.  


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience with DOE nuclear projects safety basis development, or commercial nuclear power plant licensing or analysis.
  • Knowledge in nuclear safety/engineering.
  • Technical knowledge of engineering systems and calculations,application of engineering methods and materials.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.  


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Nuclear/Chemical/Mechanical Engineering degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Professional engineering (PE) License in Nuclear Engineering or other engineering discipline.
  • Knowledge of current industry or regulatory codes and standards and study criteria pertinent to the nuclear engineering discipline.
  • Understands Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design guides, and relevant Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
