Bechtel is designing, constructing and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington state. The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.  

The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities – Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory – as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities.  


The Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC) is a limited liability corporation created by Bechtel National Inc. (BNI) and AECOM. WTCC is a subcontractor to BNI, the prime contractor, to deliver the construction, turnover, startup, and commissioning activities for the WTP project.  


This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 am to 5:00 pm. Selected applicant needs to be able and willing to work weekends as needed.


Role Overview

Identifies, evaluates and supports construction in the mitigation of workplace hazards. Develops programs, processes and procedures for use and application during both construction activities and future nuclear facility commissioning and operations. Conducts hazard analysis and risk assessments related to the design of new facilities and equipment, including hazards arising as a result of operations and maintenance activities; and identifies feasible and appropriate control strategies and or methods.


Principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Develops and implements IH programs including IH processes, procedures, specifications, and/or training courses.   
  2. Monitors daily work practices utilized by project and/or contractors/subcontractors to ensure compliance with established programs, policies, and applicable regulations.  Advises project management of noncompliance and stops work in imminent danger situations. 
  3. Recommends acceptable work practices and corrective actions and ensures their implementation.
  4. Develops IH training programs and conducts IH training meetings as necessary.
  5. Trains and directs subordinate industrial hygienists in sampling and assessment methodologies.
  6. Conducts and assists projects with sampling, monitoring, data interpretation and occupational health surveys to ensure compliance with established programs.
  7. Remains cognizant of federal, state, local, or host country regulations affecting industrial hygiene.  Ensures dissemination of information on new or revised regulations to supervisory personnel and other employees through verbal and written communications and through revisions to programs.
  8. Accompanies regulatory compliance officers/inspectors during project audits to provide technical/operational support relative to compliance with applicable standards.
  9. Assists in preparing specific reports as required in accordance with the project Environmental, Safety & Health Industrial Hygiene manual procedures and associated core processes.
  10. Designates controlled/restricted work areas in agreement with policy, regulations and the project Environmental, Safety & Health Industrial Hygiene manual.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in the sciences (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics, public health) or engineering from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 13 years of progressive related experience with safety and health regulations, systems, principles and methodologies in industrial and/or chemical operations.
  • Or in lieu of a degree, high school diploma or equivalent and 19 years of progressive related experience with safety and health regulations, systems, principles and methodologies in industrial and/or chemical operations.
  • Typically possesses advanced degree (e.g., MS, PhD) in fields of science, engineering, medical technology, or public health.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education
  • Must be able to obtain a DOE badge.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical knowledge of IH systems, principles, best practices, and calculations and the application pf IH methods, standards and materials.
  • Knowledge of IH training program materials and methods.
  • Knowledge in a field of science, process engineering, public health, industrial hygiene, occupational safety and health or related discipline.
  • High degree of technical knowledge of and experience with industrial hygiene, occupational safety, and health process development and execution in a Department of Energy (DOE) construction and nuclear facility environment.
  • Expert knowledge of industrial hygiene requirements (e.g., ACGIH) and practices (e.g., hearing protection, sampling, etc.)
  • Knowledge of problem investigation, regulatory and internal audit practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of hazard identification and risk assessment strategies in accordance with applicable guidance documents (e.g., 10 CFR 851.21 and 851.22, ANSI Z590.3, MIL-STD-882).
  • Proficient in computer applications.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication.
  • Knowledge of Bechtel standard computer applications.
  • Prior practical work experience in applied environment, safety, and health with the design, construction, and operation of industrial and highly hazardous chemical facilities.
  • Experience as a supervisor and/or manager at industrial facilities involving highly hazardous chemicals, posing significant risks to the environment, safety, and health.
  • Candidate possess the legal right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship.
