Project Overview:

Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington State. The Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant will use vitrification technology to process and solidify 56 million gallons (210 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford site, which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.

 

The project is the largest undertaking of its kind and one of DOE’s most technically challenging cleanup projects. Its construction spans 65 acres (26 hectares) with four major nuclear facilities – Pretreatment, Low-Activity Waste Vitrification, High-Level Waste Vitrification and Analytical Laboratory – as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, other support facilities.

 

This position is located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) and works a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Selected applicant needs to be able and willing to work weekends as needed. Selected applicant needs to be able and willing to work night shift (5:30pm to 4:00am) and weekends as needed.

 

The Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC) is a limited liability corporation created by Bechtel National Inc. (BNI) and Amentum. WTCC is a subcontractor to BNI, the prime contractor, to deliver the construction, turnover, startup, and commissioning activities for the WTP project.

 

Job Summary:

The Fire Protection Manager (FPM) reports to the Safety & Health Manager. The FPM is responsible for assisting WTCC S&H Manager in the implementation of and compliance with fire protection requirements and activities of the Waste Treatment Plant. #LI-EH1

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Managing WTCC Fire Protection Group
  • Developing, implementing, and revising Fire Protection Procedures
  • Developing, completing, and maintaining training as identified in Fire Protection Program
  • Coordinating with managers to ensure effective implementation of Fire Protection Program and procedures
  • Serve as the Requirements Area Manager for Fire Protection
  • Performing or providing required Subject Matter Expert for Fire Protection
  • Develop and Implementation of Fire Protection Program requirements and procedures
  • Maintaining and reporting required Fire Protection performance metrics and related event information
  • Serving as the primary interface with WTCC Safety & Health Manager on Fire Protection issues
  • Performing or providing National Fire Protection Association 72 Qualified Person(s) to support Maintenance
  • Performing or providing personnel to perform Fire Protection Program Assessments
  • Performing or providing personnel to conduct Facility Assessments
  • Performing or providing personnel to conduct fire prevention and life safety inspections
  • Ensuring that identified deficiencies from a fire prevention and life safety inspection are promptly identified and responded to with a corrective action
  • Ensuring Fire Protection personnel are trained to perform program and facility assessments, inspections, and implement fire protection procedures
  • Review work packages to ensure that transient combustibles brought into the facility are reviewed for fire safety impact, controlled when in use and controlled when stored
  • Coordination with Hanford Fire Department
  • Maintain expert-level knowledge in the field of fire protection
  • Reviewing and understanding Fire Hazard Analysis
  • Reviewing and understanding of active and passive fire protection features
  • Performing or providing personnel to daily, weekly, monthly fire protection inspections in accordance with inspection procedure
  • Providing technical expertise to construction, start-up, commissioning, and plant management to implement fire protection requirements
  • Performing or providing personnel to perform the functions of Fire Impairment Coordinator(s)
  • Developing and/or approving compensatory actions for impairments, deficiencies, and system restrictions in accordance with the impairment procedure
  • Support the Waste Treatment Plant Nuclear Safety Quality Culture by emphasizing the values of safety and quality in the performance of work in order to protect self, others, and the environment
  • Responsible for directing assigned staff providing fire protection technical support and oversight of the Fire Protection Program implementation.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Fire Science, or related degree and 13-15 years of experience or 17-19 years of relevant work experience

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in implementing fire protection requirements in accomplishing work at DOE, NRC or Chemical Demilitarization facilities. 
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate requirements into project implementing documents and in maintaining these documents current with source requirements.   
  • Department of Energy (DOE), NRC, or Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program experience desired.
