Project Overview:
Join us as we make history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest.
Sitting at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake and Yakima rivers near two mountain ranges, our community provides access to year-round outdoor recreation, 300 days of sun a year, more than 200 wineries within a 50-mile radius, and the amenities of large cities just a three-hour drive (or short flight) to Seattle and Portland.
Job Summary:
In this role, you will analyze life safety requirements for buildings, perform on-site fire protection system evaluations, prepare reports, calculations, and engineering specifications for fire protection equipment. You will assist in the design and development of fire protection systems and equipment implementing programs and procedures. Your work will promote fire safety for employees, facilities, and job sites.
Part-Time Telework: This position is a full-time role that offers part-time telework flexibility in the Richland, Washington project office. Upon initial hire and onboarding, the position will require full time presence in the Richland, Washington project office, then may offer part-time telework flexibility. This position works a 9/80 schedule, offering every other Friday off.
Please be advised that the telework designation of the position may be changed in the future at the discretion of the company or project.
Major Responsibilities:
Level 1
- Assists in the design and development of Fire Protection systems and equipment including sprinkler, fire pump, fire alarm and mass notification systems in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements
- Assists in performing on-site fire protection system evaluations and assists with final system testing
- Prepares technical reports, studies, and design documentation, calculations using engineering software, and specifications for complex fire protection equipment supporting systems
- Applies principles of fire safety in the development and maintenance of the fire hazards analysis
- Assists in implementing programs and procedures to ensure employee and facility safety is in accordance with all OSHA, NFPA and Life Safety Code requirements
- Maintains current knowledge of all building and fire protection codes and regulations to assure compliance
Level 2
- Analyzes life safety requirements for buildings, including building code compliance, occupancy determination, occupant load calculations and egress analysis
- Participates and prepares Fire Hazards Analysis and fire protection assessments.
- Participates in the development of fire protection system P&IDs, fire detection and alarm system drawings, and fire barrier drawings.
- Performs on-site fire protection system evaluations and assists with final system testing.
- Assists in performing building and fire code analyses and interpretations
- Prepares technical reports, studies, and design documentation, calculations using engineering software, and specifications for fire protection equipment supporting systems.
- Visits construction sites to monitor progress and resolve construction issues in a timely manner.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Level 1
- Requires a bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering with less than 1 year of professional work experience or in lieu of degree 4-5 years of relevant professional work experience in fire protection system design.
Level 2
- Requires a bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering with a minimum of 1-2 years of relevant professional work experience or in lieu of degree 5-6 years of relevant professional work experience in fire protection system design.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
- Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge)
- Must possess the right to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship.
- Capable of working on problems of limited to moderate scope.
- Capabale of following defined practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained.
- Capable of building productive and collaborative internal working relationships.
