Position Summary

The Environmental & Sustainability Specialist helps execute the environmental and sustainability management system and its components.  Key activities involve administrative, data analysis and field tasks per established industry practices, procedures, and regulatory and Bechtel requirements.  The position involves practical application of biology, ecology, chemistry, social sciences, and related disciplines for managing environmental and sustainability aspects of our business and offering support to projects and proposals. This position reports to the Environmental Manager.

 

Responsibilities

  • Executes assignments involving an array of scientific, environmental, and social issues requiring independent judgment and experience in the application of environmental and sustainability methods and plans.
  • Interprets and integrates environmental and sustainability requirements and issues into proposals, planning documents, permit applications, design criteria, construction plans, schedules, and subcontract documents for major projects.
  • Provides input to proposals and estimates with respect to integration and compliance with environmental and sustainability requirements.
  • Interprets requirements and provides technical support and guidance regarding environmental mitigation tasks, controls, sustainability concepts, and protection of environmentally sensitive areas, species, and communities.
  • Provides recommendations and input for ES&H and sustainability procedures, work processes, and other continuous improvement measures inherent to management systems.
  • Analyzes data, tracks environmental and sustainability performance and trends, and prepares technical reports. 
  • Provides technical guidance and support regarding mitigation measures and opportunity enhancements pertaining to natural and cultural resources and communities for bids and projects.
  • Provides technical assistance to other project groups regarding risk assessment, plan preparation, studies, and environmental and sustainability program execution.
  • As an off-project resource, may assist in the development and/or assessing the implementation of project Environmental Management Plans, Sustainability Plans and other associated plans and procedures. 
  • Identifies and tracks environmental issues, sustainability and ESG evolving regulatory requirements, and pertinent stakeholder concerns that are material to the business unit.

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • A Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) from an accredited university or college in an applicable technical discipline such as environmental science, ecology, biology, natural resources, archaeology, or related disciplines with 8 or more years of relevant experience; with 6 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Specialized technical skills, knowledge, and understanding within an applicable environmental discipline.
  • Knowledge or experience in environmental and social impact assessment.
  • Ability to research and comprehend organizational and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer skills for preparing presentations, data management, and report preparation.
  • Prior work experience related to applicable environmental sciences, sustainability value creation, and/or risk assessment.
  • Adaptable and able to travel on occasion as necessary.

 

Additional Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest, training, and experience in applied sciences.
  • Knowledge and experience with ISO 14001 Management System standards.
  • Knowledge of sustainability goals and requirements (e.g., IFC performance standards, UN Sustainable Development Goals, Paris Agreement)
  • Broad technical knowledge, scientific skills, and technical writing abilities.
  • Knowledge and experience with environmental impact assessment and mitigation strategies.
  • Master of Science degree from an accredited university or college in an applicable discipline such as environmental science, ecology, biology, natural resources, economics, sociology, sustainable business or other related disciplines helpful but not required.
