Project Overview:

Several combined cycle power projects are currently planned to be developed and executed by Bechtel over the next 5-10 years. During the development phase of these projects, teams will be organized to support multiple projects concurrently.

Following project award, dedicated project teams will be formed and the Principal Engineer Plant Design will have functional oversight for the combined cycle power projects.

 

Job Summary:

The Principal Engineer - Plant Design will support the development and execution of combined cycle power projects in the Plant Design discipline. In this role, you will utilize individual technical knowledge to interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate the engineering technical aspects for complex power projects. You will participate in project planning, proposal review, and will own the engineering elements of capital estimates. Your technical guidance and recommendations will ensure engineering aspects meet project requirements and remain within scope and budget.

In this role, you will be responsible for establishing the technical investigations and client interviews, to determine work scope and cost estimates for a project’s plant design aspects. You will have oversight of design, development, modification, evaluation, and constructability reviews of piping systems and plant layout. Your technical expertise will ensure the unique and complex requirements of a combined cycle power project’s plant design aspects are met. #LI-JL1 

"This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and will require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership”

 

Major Responsibilities:

Level I:

  • Plans, develops, coordinates and reviews plant design and piping engineering work on large size projects or assignments in support of a global business unit​ 
  • Develops conceptual designs for plant design and piping projects or projects having specialized or unique requirements​ 
  • Examines and analyzes pipe configurations for ANSI/ASME code compliance​. Interprets new or special regulations, codes, standards, criteria, and performance data​ 
  • Optimizes facility layout based on piping and instrument diagrams, client requirements, current technology, and operational and maintenance requirements​ 
  • Provides the technical input to meet procurement requirements​ 
  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule, and budget, and supports implementation and assists with performance reporting​ 
  • Reviews and approves key design documents, supplier drawings and data, material specifications, drawings and change orders, for the project to which assigned​  

Level II:

  • Serves as consultant to global business unit management, project and specialty plant design and piping engineering employees providing advice and counsel on special and unique assignments​ 
  • Participates directly in new business efforts involving specialized and unique plant design applications​. Interviews client personnel to determine their needs, develops scope for cost estimates for services and participates in proposal preparation and presentation​ 
  • Provides substantive guidance and direction to plant design and piping engineering personnel in the development of design criteria and specifications​ 
  • Screens and recommends selection of special outside consultants. Coordinates their activities and monitors their performance​ 
  • Develops and coordinates special technical educational and training programs for Bechtel personnel​ 

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

Level I:

  • Requires bachelor's or master's degree (or international equivalent) and 13-15 years of relevant experience or 17-19 years of relevant work experience​ 
  • Must have at least 10 years prior experience working on piping design and plant layout for combined cycle fossil power plants

Level II:

  • Requires bachelor's or master's degree (or international equivalent) and 15+ years of relevant experience or 19+ years of relevant work experience​.
  • Must have at least 10 years prior experience working on piping design and plant layout for combined cycle fossil power plants
  • Must have at least 5 years of prior experience as a Plant Design Engineering Group Supervisor or a Project Engineer on complex self-perform fossil power projects

 

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to perform power plant and equipment layout considering requirements for access, operations, maintenance and safety,
  • Ability to optimize pipe routing considering requirements for cost, access, operations, flexibility, and thermal stress
  • Experience with specification of piping, pipe supports, valves, insulation, and in-line piping specialties such as expansion joints, strainers and flanges
  • Working knowledge of piping design codes and standards including ASME B31.1, AWWA, NFPA and US plumbing codes.
  • Ability to work with and read Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams
  •  Experience working with SmartPlant suite of products including SmartPlant P&ID
