Project Overview:
Several combined cycle power projects are currently planned to be developed and executed by Bechtel over the next 5-10 years. During the development phase of these projects, teams will be organized to support multiple projects concurrently. Following project award dedicated project teams will be formed and the Principal Engineer - Civil/Structural will have functional oversight for all the combined cycle power projects.
The Principal Engineer - Civil/Structural will initially be based in the Reston VA office, with international business travel as required.
Job Summary:
The Principal Engineer - Civil/Structural will support the development and execution of combined cycle power projects in the civil / structural discipline. In this role, you will utilize individual technical knowledge to interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate the engineering technical aspects for complex projects. You will participate in project planning, proposal review, and will own the engineering elements of capital estimates. Your technical guidance and recommendations will ensure engineering aspects meet project requirements and remain within scope and budget.
In this role, you will be responsible for establishing the requirements to determine work scope and cost estimates for a project’s civil/structural aspects. You will have oversight of design, development, modification, evaluation, and constructability reviews of civil/structural components and processes. Your technical expertise will ensure the unique and complex requirements of a project’s civil/structural aspects are met.

Major Responsibilities:
Level 1
- Plans and conducts independent scope of work and technical specifications for Civil/Structural design and field investigations on large size projects or assignments in support of a global business unit
- Oversight of the design, development, modification and evaluation of Civil/Structural components and processes utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures
- Reviews key design documents, supplier drawings and data, material specifications, drawings, change orders, and bid summaries for the project to which assigned
- Reviews the appropriate use of various structural elements such as steel, wood, masonry, and concrete to ensure appropriate material is used based on load or stress requirements
- Reviews complex Civil/Structural engineering deliverables, such as steel and concrete calculations, specifications, and material requisitions
- Develops conceptual designs for Civil/Structural engineering projects or projects having specialized or unique requirements
- Interviews client personnel to determine their needs, develops scope for cost estimates for services and participates in proposal preparation and presentation
- Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline estimates and work plans in accordance with project scope, schedule, and budget, and supports implementation and assists with performance reporting
Level 2
- Participates directly in new business efforts involving specialized and unique Civil/Structural applications
- Screens and recommends selection of special outside consultants. Coordinates their activities and monitors their performance
- Conducts or leads special studies on economic feasibility and on new Civil/Structural technologies, methods and materials
- Establishes detailed project execution plan and the development of the overall project Civil/Structural engineering budget and schedule. Reviews project Civil/Structural engineering progress against approved schedules, evaluates changes and takes corrective action when required
- Provides inputs to and owns the Civil/Structural engineering elements of a project capital estimate (proposals and execution) quantities and budgets
Education and Experience Requirements:
Level 1

Requires a bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering (or international equivalent) and 13-15 years of relevant experience.
Level 2
-
Requires a bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering (or international equivalent) and 15+ years of relevant experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Level 1
- Minimum of ten years' experience with self perform Combined Cycle projects.
- Recognized as advanced contributor with specialized skill set
- Considered subject matter expert within discipline
- Having wide-ranging experience, uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways
Level 2
- Minimum of five years' experience as an Engineering Group Supervisor or Project Engineer on a complex self-perform fossil power project.
- Recognized as an expert and advisor within the organization
- Requires highly specialized skill set
- Knowledgeable about emerging trends and influences best practices within discipline
