Operations Manager, Corporate Environmental, Safety and Health

Assists Corporate Manager of Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) with setting strategic direction and interfaces with global business unit level to align goals and objectives. Oversees and guides improvement of Corporate processes, policies and initiatives. Assists Global Business Unit’s (GBU’s), when needed, in all aspects of Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) (including medical and industrial hygiene), processes, procedures, systems, methods and policies critical to the success of ES&H on multiple projects and/or within multiple global business units (GBUs). Ensures interpretation of complex governmental requirements and internal initiatives evaluating and applying appropriate ES&H principles, and formulating scopes of work, plans, and methodologies suitable for achieving and maintaining compliance with global ES&H requirements and delivery of Corporate ES&H initiatives. Provides leadership for the development and maintenance of the corporate ES&H process improvement team.




Guides, coaches, and motivates corporate team performance and those directly associated with developing ES&H processes, procedures, systems, methods, and policies critical to the success of ES&H function

Empowers and leads corporate personnel to work to their maximum capability and efficiency to ensure the delivery of products and strategies for ES&H functional success

Promotes integrity, technical competence, and commitment to ES&H within GBU's and corporate ES&H organization

Works with Corporate management on with respect to strategy and implementation ES&H requirements

Will function as a special operations manager and be required to spend extended periods on selected projects

Coordinates appropriate consideration of ES&H initiatives and inclusions with engineering, and construction functional management

Provides operational direction and functional supervision of a portion of functional ES&H department

Manages and conducts serious accident and/or fatality investigations and notifications; documents factors contributing to an incident and ensures the preparation of required reports

Participates, as directed by the Manager of Corporate ES&H, project management and Legal and Risk Management, at hearings or litigations involving recent or past injuries, accidents or work-related illnesses that occurred on projects/facilities

Manages development of cross-training curriculums and materials for use by the Global Business Units

Maintains relationships with internal and external organizations, customers, and contractor/subcontractor representatives to coordinate technical/scientific issues, new technologies, and integration of ES&H functional Maintains contact, as appropriate, with government regulatory and resource agencies to obtain

current information on new regulations, program initiatives, and technical requirements and standards as they apply to the company

Maintains communications, as appropriate, with representatives of Bechtel or client insurance brokers/carriers to obtain and exchange information

Maintains contact with other environmental, safety and/or health personnel in multiple GBU's to keep them informed of changing requirements and to provide technical assistance as needed provides oversight and direction for ES&H innovation development and deployment

Interprets applicable ES&H standards and supervises their integration into applicable corporate documents

Executes other ES&H duties as assigned by Manager of Corporate ES&H


Basic Qualifications:


15+ years of experience in environmental and/or safety engineering, process safety, health or related discipline
Knowledge and working experience in 2 Global Business Units / Industries

Must have a professional designation such a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) or hold an equivalent designation


Preferred Qualifications:


Strong supervisory and ES&H program development skills

A recognized 4-year degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university in a related field of study

Knowledge of ES&H sciences/engineering systems, principles, and methodologies.

Experience in leading and managing all aspects of ES&H at a GBU or corporate level

Extensive and demonstrated knowledge of national and international ES&H laws/regulations and regulatory/resource agencies permitting processes and

responsibilities, industry standards for ES&H compliance, and best management practices for minimizing potential ES&H impacts.

Broad knowledge of engineering and construction systems, methods and work processes.

Broad knowledge of construction planning, estimating, procedures, and execution.

Demonstrated experience in managing and/or providing technical oversight of ES&H departments or sub-functions

Knowledge of Bechtel's organizational structure, functions, and administrative procedures.

Knowledge of technical vocabularies and terminology common to industrial hygiene, health physics, safety engineering, and environmental compliance.

Extensive experience in implementing and managing ES&H training programs.

Excellent written and oral communication skills with demonstrated experience providing direction/supervising a team
