Project Overview:
Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility.

This position is subject to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulation 10 CFR Part 810, which governs the transfer of hardware, materials, and technology to support the construction and operation of commercial nuclear power plants overseas.
Job Summary:
As a Mechanical Engineering Lead, you will support the Mechanical Engineering Group Supervisor in leading other Mechanical Engineers in preparing designs for Mechanical Systems to support the project. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving capabilities, and the desire to innovate designs. This position has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating these assignments. This involves exploration of the subject area, the definition of the scope, and may involve the development of novel concepts, approaches, and solutions. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in system design and will be capable of developing design documents including piping and instrument diagrams and equipment data sheets that incorporate the applicable design. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in developing the design. Additionally, the ideal candidate must have excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), can be the “face” of Bechtel, promoting our leadership, quality, and safety values, to external partners including vendors, construction companies, and other subcontractors.
Major Responsibilities:
- Lead a small team of 3-5 engineers performing a scope of work
- Coordinate and resolve technical issues in assigned areas with specialty groups, engineering disciplines, the client, vendor, contractors, construction and other functional groups
- Execute schedule requirements while maintaining a high degree of quality in work products
- Support development of project cost and schedule estimates
- Evaluates, selects, and applies standard mechanical engineering methods, techniques, procedures and criteria for a small size project or assignment in support of a global business unitor staff group to include the preparation of original designs layouts, details, drawings and specifications
- Designs, develops, modifies, and evaluates mechanical components and processes utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs)
- Prepares or assists in preparation of conceptual studies, designs, reports or proposals
- When delegated, provides guidance to other mechanical engineering personnel for specific tasks or projects
- Provides technical assistance to other mechanical personnel and will interact with project functions, the customer, and regulatory agency personnel in the resolution of complex regulatory issues
- Provides assistance to project and construction management in identifying and complying with project mechanical requirements and in addressing issues as they arise during project execution
- Mentors and assists more junior mechanical team members
- Completes mechanical documentation and procedures for installation and maintenance
- Selects components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires a bachelor's degree in Mechanical (or related) Engineering and a minimum of 8 years of relevant professional work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Related experience includes, but is not limited to, experience in Piping and Instrument Diagram (P&ID) development, fluid system design, hydraulic, heat transfer, and thermodynamic calculations, and equipment specification and design development for waste processing, nuclear, refinery, power, or chemical process facilities.
- Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards.
- Hands-on Microsoft office programs and other computer programs.
- Extensive knowledge and application of ANSI/ASME Codes and Standards including ASME B31.1 or B31.3.
- Extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering work processes, procedures, and specifications.
- Excellent oral and written communication, planning, and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of Bechtel Corporate guides and standards.
- Experience in working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1, MIL-Q-9858A, or ISO-9000.
- Previous Bechtel and/or DOD or DOE project experience.
- U.S. Professional Engineering License in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering (or ability to obtain within 12 months).
