Position Summary:


Reporting to the Nuclear, Security & Environmental business line’s, Executive Vice President, the Manager of Marketing Strategy implements plans to achieve the organization's objectives for growth and diversification through expansion of present business activities and development of new areas of activity. Personally responsible for developing business with major companies and customers within the organization’s charter, while providing management guidance and operational functional supervision to Business development Sector leads, BD Managers and the Proposal Center Manager. The Nuclear, Security & Environmental business line includes Bechtel's support for the US DOE and DOD's missions, as well as the commercial nuclear power industry both domestically and internationally.




1. Directs the efforts and activities of the Business Development managers/representatives in maintaining, improving and/or building relationships with customers or prospective customers. Assists staff in or is personally responsible for:

  • Developing and maintaining personal relationships with appropriate middle and senior management executives in customer organizations and developing advantageous positions to gain prospective work.
  • Being knowledgeable of present and future customer project plans.
  • Developing and maintaining associations in the business community to keep aware of new business opportunities.

2. Conducts research of current and future markets for present and new services for the organization. Develops recommendations for new services that the organization should offer and new industry markets that the organization should actively pursue.

3. Keeps aware of business development activity and strategy of competitors including their pricing trends, policies, awards, and losses. Follows up on jobs lost to competition to determine the reasons why Bechtel was not selected and monitors the competitor's project performance.

4. Directs the preparation of proposals, including obtaining engineering, estimating, procurement, legal, and labor inputs. Recommends commercial strategy and pricing. Participates in proposal and pricing reviews and makes specific recommendations to senior management on request.

5. Participates in final proposal presentations and negotiates Bechtel responsibilities and fee with customers.

6. Directs the preparation of and obtains legal and management approval of contracts for awarded projects.

7. Prepares periodic reports on the status of active new business opportunities for organization and corporate management.

8. Formulates and recommends business development policies, plans, and programs for achieving sales and diversification objectives.

9. Reviews and approves department personnel plans and actions, and trains and develops personnel in accordance with plans and budgets.

10. Maintains professional relationships with senior offices of customers and industry personnel.

11. Is a member of the corporate Business Development Committee, participates in overall Bechtel business development strategy and planning.

12. Manages the Public Affairs and Communications efforts through the Manager of Communications & Public Relations, organizing external marketing and informational content and internal communications.


Basic Qualifications and Skills:


  • At least 15 years’ experience in development of business, sales and sustainable relationships with customers and/or experience in commercial nuclear operations and new builds and/or government scopes, such as DoE and DoD.
  • Demonstrated ability to screen prospective customers and to formulate and present new concepts for business development and project conceptualization.
  • Skills in oral and written communications and presentation skills to customers and senior management.
  • Effective negotiation skills that  build partnerships
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, supervise, and develop personnel.
