Project Overview:
Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Electronic Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility.   This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and we are looking for the talent that will help expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long-lasting energy future for generations to come.   

Position Overview: 
As the Lead Structural Engineer, you will be responsible for supervising other structural engineers and helping to execute assignments concerned with specialized or unique engineering requirements in a global business unit. This position has technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, and coordinating these assignments. This involves exploration of the subject area, definition of scope, and may involve the development of novel concepts, approaches, and solutions. Additionally, you will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design. Upon initial hire and onboarding, the position will require full time presence in the Reston, Virginia project office.  Part-Time telework flexibility may be an option as the project progresses. The ideal candidate must have solid experience in structural design (steel and concrete), turbine building design and analysis, and will be capable of developing design documents that incorporate the applicable design.  

Responsibilities: 

  • Support structural design development for the project by preparing studies, drawings, and evaluations, in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements. 
  • Work with other structural designers/engineers and technical disciplines in a team environment.
  • Originate and check Civil/Structural deliverables of high complexity, including structural steel design drawings. 
  • Originate and check Civil/Structural deliverables of high complexity, including structural concrete and reinforcing design drawings. 
  • Interpret and verify industry standards, guidelines, and codes for project deliverables. 
  • Report design quantities compared to estimated quantities. 
  • Work with CSA Engineering Group Supervisor and Deputy Engineering Group Supervisor to plan, budget and schedule calculations, drawings, and 3-D model deliverables within the discipline. 
  • Participate in project design/model reviews. 
  • Participate in constructability reviews. 
  • Review vendor information from subcontractors and integrate it into the design solution. 
  • Execute schedule requirements while maintaining a high degree of quality in work products.
  • Coordinate closely with other technical disciplines in executing work as an integrated team. 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Grade 26: BS degree in Engineering (Civil/Structural or related), from an accredited university, with at least 8-10 years of relevant experience or, in lieu of a degree, 12-14 years of relevant experience. 
  • Grade 27: BS degree in Engineering (Civil/Structural or related), from an accredited university, with at least 10-13 years of relevant experience or, in lieu of a degree, 14-17 years of relevant experience. 
  • Must be authorized to live and work in the US without sponsorship.  
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Have a U.S. Professional Engineering (PE) license.  
  • Experience creating structural design calculations and drawings.
  • Experience working in turbine building design and analysis and able to create and interpret turbine equipment drawings as required. 
  • Experience in the use of industry standard applications of CAD software. 
  • Work experience should emphasize the civil/structural design of heavy industrial-type facilities.
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel. 
  • Familiar with the provisions of AISC, ACI, IBC, and OSHA codes. Knowledge of construction materials and construction details and techniques.  Eurocode experience desired.
  • Familiar with the methods of procurement and control of bulk materials. 
  • Knowledge of technical responsibilities of other disciplines associated with Facilities Design. 
  • Ability to independently execute the detailed design calculations and drawings of civil/structural systems of high complexity. 
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering deliverables, such as drawings and specifications. 
  • Ability to express technical issues in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally. 
  • Ability to resolve design issues with subordinates, other engineering disciplines, construction, and the client. 
  • Ability to issue clear and concise direction to subordinate designers and drafters. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • MS degree in Civil/Structural or related Engineering, from an accredited university. 
  • Experience in the structural design (steel and concrete) for Nuclear Quality and Safety Environment. 
  • Experience working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ISO-9000 and/or NQA-1.
  • Experience with Eurocode and IAEA requirements for European Nuclear design. 
  • Experience with the use or knowledge of MicroStation structural suite(s) and/or SmartPlant. 
  • Construction field experience. 
  • Experience with AP1000 Nuclear Power Plant Design. 
  • Prior experience working in a Nuclear Quality and Safety Environment.
