Project Overview:

The Versatile Test Reactor (VTR) Project is developing a 300MWt sodium-cooled fast reactor with a secondary sodium loop that transfers the reactor heat to the atmosphere via sodium-to-air heat exchangers.  The reactor will be used for testing and investigation of fuels and materials subjected to high, fast neutron flux of fast reactor environments.   The VTR Project will be located on the Idaho National Lab site in Idaho.  Phase 1 of the Project is to develop a VTR concept to support generation of a high-confidence cost estimate and schedule that will be used to inform a Department of Energy decision on whether to proceed with Phase 2 final design, construction and commissioning.   The Bechtel scope of work for Phase 1 will include conceptual design for the non-reactor systems and components and the design of the structures.   Bechtel work will be executed in Reston, Virginia.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering methods, techniques, procedures and criteria, using independent judgment with oversight from more senior engineers.
  • Develop, review and coordinate documents with suppliers, other disciplines and customers.
  • Proficient with basic engineering deliverables such as drawings, specifications and calculations.
  • Performs electrical engineering design, including the development of single line diagrams, panel schedules, schematics, connection diagrams, load lists, etc.
  • Develops material requisitions and specifications for non-standard equipment and bills of material for off-the-shelf equipment and components.
  • Properly interprets and applies codes & standards and customer design requirements, for the preparation of electrical design documents, specifications, material requisitions and system descriptions related to design tasks.
  • Conducts document and design checking as required. 
  • Demonstrates leadership qualities with emphasis on continuous improvement and team building, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Assists in preparation of forecasts, quantity take-offs and change orders.

Basic Qualifications:       

  • BS degree in Electrical engineering with 1 years of relevant experience.
  • Must be able to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience with Microsoft office programs, VISIO, and other common computer programs.
  • Knowledge and application of NEC code and ANSI/IEEE Standards.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, schematics and electrical equipment layouts.
  • Familiar with industry wide electrical design tools, such as CAD 2D and electronic Cable Management System.
  • Excellent oral & written communications skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS degree in Electrical Engineering
  • EIT/FE registration.
  • Experience with GE Nuclear Plant designs.
  • Modular reactor design experience.
  • Previous Bechtel and/or DOD or DOE project experience
