Position Summary

Earthquake Engineering Specialist in the Geotechnincal & Hydraulic Engineering Services (G&HES) group. Applies expertise in a numerical modeling and seismic analysis of nuclear structures including soil-structure interaction, origination and checking of calculations under nuclear NQA-1 requirements, preparing licensing documents, and attending meetings with clients and regulators. Follows industry standards and applies requirements of the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for modeling, analysis, and interpretation of seismic responses for design application.

 

Responsibilities

  • Managing data for soil dynamics, structural dynamics, and seismic input motion for analyzing seismic response 
  • Applying industry standards (ASCE 4, ASCE 43, and ANS) and implementing regulatory requirements of the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for preparation of calculations
  • Using computer programs SHAKE2000, P-SHAKE, and SASSI2010 (or equivalents) and related Bechtel Standard Computer Programs such as GT-STRUDL, DATAN, and BSIMQKE (or equivalents) for modeling and analysis
  • Programming using MATLAB, MathCad, Fortran, Visual Basic, and/or C++  for upgrade and modifications of existing programs
  • Preparing licensing documents and supporting calculations for commercial nuclear power plants, including complying with NQA-1 requirements for data and software
  • Participating in technical meetings with expert consultants and regulatory personnel

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • An M.S. degree in Structural or Geotechnical Engineering with a focus on earthquake engineering with 8 years of related experience, or a Ph.D. degree in Structural or Geotechnical Engineering with a focus on earthquake engineering with 6 years of related experience.
  • Experience in seismic analysis and modeling of soil-structure interaction for nuclear structures.
  • Track record of publishing technical papers and presenting papers at technical conferences, and participating on relevant industry technical and codes & standards committees.
  • Ability to work effectively on a geographically distributed team where interaction occurs primarily by phone, email and Teams.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to and remain at jobsites or offices in the U.S. and overseas on generally short-term assignments.
