Area Manager (Indirects)

Position Summary:

The Area Manager for Indirects is responsible for:

  • Reviewing the project schedule and sequence of the craft staffing schedule to plan for project indirect needs.
  • Reviewing any schedule revisions for impacts and participates in the development of contingency planning.
  • Coordinating with the project plan for delivery of an indirect program in support of project-specific requirements.
  • Monitoring and ensuring adherence to standard work process procedures (SWPPs) relating to Indirect work activities.
  • Monitoring and controlling the indirect costs and budget.
  • Monitoring craft consumption for tools and scaffold.
  • Monitoring the preparation and issuance of material requisitions.
  • Providing the interface between construction and procurement to identify, requisition and establish delivery dates for indirect material requirements.
  • Monitoring procurement reports and activities to ensure indirect milestone schedule dates are met.
  • Developing and conducting training to ensure that all assigned indirects personnel are properly trained and qualified.
  • Assisting in the preparation of work hour estimates for the project. Establishing long-range staffing requirements and coordinating the timely staffing of positions. Monitoring personnel utilization throughout the duration of the project.
  • Monitoring usage of indirects equipment to minimize cost of idle equipment.
  • Monitoring the activities of designated subcontractors or vendors to ensure compliance with specifications and schedules.
  • Monitoring scaffolding activities, material, and quality for the project.
  • Must have knowledge of all phases of construction operations.
  • Ensures required permits are in place prior to the start of the work at site.
  • Maintaining and implementing a temporary facilities, utilities, and services plan/program to ensure project needs are met.



The responsibilities of the Area Manager for Indirects include the following:

  • Implementing the project ES&H program.
  • Providing leadership and championing the “Zero Accidents” philosophy.
  • Coordinating craft safety training and enforcing safe work practices at all times in conjunction with the ES&H staff.
  • Planning the craft manpower and interfacing with Industrial Relations for craft recruitment, hiring, and skills training programs.
  • Coordinating Indirect needs of the Direct craft.
  • Ensuring all rigging, lifting, loading, and offloading activites are done in a safe manner.
  • Working closely with area and discipline superintendents and coordinating efforts and activities to meet the overall project requirements.
  • Maintaining a high level of housekeeping thoughout the work area.
  • Performing employee reviews for subordinate personnel and assisting in their development.


Work includes field inspections and requires the physical ability to conduct field inspections which require the following activities:extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, and working on elevated platforms, working on uneven surfaces, and working in small or confined spaces. Some lifting may be required. Must have the ability to walk into and out of the project (enter/egress). Must be able to use appropriate standard issued personal protective equipment (PPE) required for each assigned task (i.e., body harness, life vest, etc.)


Qualifications and Skills

Basic Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated technical expertise and knowledge of indirects management. 
  • Knowledge of trade tools to meet work requirements on a heavy industrial project.
  • Possesses written and verbal communication skills, particularly negotiating and conflict resolution abilities. Strong organization and planning skills desired.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft word processing, spreadsheet and database applications in accordance with current BSAP standards.
  • Planning, scheduling and forecasting knowledge required.
  • Must be familiar with the Bechtel Business Ethics handbook and policies.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of the requirements of the Bechtel Environmental, Safety & Health (ES&H) Core Processes and Bechtel’s “Zero Accidents” philosophy.
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of Bechtel's Standard Work Process Procedures (SWPPs).
  • Must have knowledge and understanding of Bechtel Standard Application Program (BSAP) standards and other automation tools which are used on Bechtel projects.
