Control Systems Engineers at Bechtel perform the analysis, design, specifications, and startup support for all aspects of measurement instrumentation and automated digital system process control.  From the sensors in the field that detect process conditions, to the detailed algorithms controlling equipment functions, to the graphical human interfaces on the operator control stations, the control systems engineer’s work integrates all aspects of system monitoring and control that result in operational plants and facilities.


The total number of hires and start dates are subject to workload and business conditions. Locations will vary based on project needs, and may include Houston, TX or Reston, VA, along with various project sites.


General Job Duties:

This entry level position will allow you to perform assignments that will develop professional working knowledge and abilities through the application of applicable codes and standards, as well as engineering calculations and techniques, procedures and criteria. You will exercise limited, but increasing, judgment in performing your assigned duties using methods prescribed by your supervisor.


Control Systems Engineer

Control Systems Engineers make Bechtel projects functional by taking the process design intent and designing a functioning control system to meet that intent.  Project facilities consist of many mechanical and electrical systems, and as a Control Systems Engineer, you’ll create the controls for all of them so they operate efficiently together.  The variety of control systems tasks demands detail-oriented individuals with multifaceted skills, particularly in-depth technical expertise, flexibility, enthusiasm for individual and team tasks, and analytical problem-solving capabilities.


Typical Activities

  • Develop automation networks and provide technical specifications for state-of-the-art distributed digital control systems and programmable logic controllers
  • Formulate and implement diverse process control strategies and program algorithms
  • Provide expertise in the selection, application, and installation of process instrumentation and control valves
  • Originate and program logic diagrams to control mechanical systems and develop system graphics to facilitate plant operations


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Electro-Mech, or Software Engineering from an accredited college or university within twelve (12) months of graduation date.
  • Must be willing to relocate to a project or job site.
  • Possess the eligibility to work and remain in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check.


Required Qualifications

  • Skilled in oral and written communication
  • Proficient in computer applications and operating systems
  • Good automation, data entry, and report preparation skills
  • Knowledge of Computer Aided Design (CAD)
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Electro-Mech, or Software Engineering from an accredited college or university within twelve (12) months of graduation date.
  • Preferred Process Controls Courses
  • Prior engineering experience through part time work or previous internships
  • Interest in software programming
