Job Summary:

The Deputy GM Planning and Design will report to the GM Planning and Design and will oversee the engineering activity (all disciplines) and the design work for a broad range of engineering disciplines associated with the Capital Portfolio. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Extensive experience of undertaking and managing complex infrastructure projects, specifically Airport design from feasibility to detailed design and as-builts.  
  • Performs work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements.
  • Directs and provides technical and administrative guidance as required to assigned Project and/or discipline Engineers in the management of engineering projects.
  • Provides input to annual performance reviews in accordance with approved procedures and holds career development discussions.
  • Keeps informed on the status of all projects involving assigned personnel with respect to schedule, budget, work quality, and contributes leadership, experience and expertise in the solution of difficult problems.
  • Participates in and supports technical risk assessments (e.g. HAZIDs, HAZOPs, IDCs/IDRs, QRAs) to ensure safety practices and procedures are implemented, and engineering design and corresponding documentation are in compliance with the project Quality management system and procedures.
  • Reviews major changes or deviations in project scope, project material quantities, budget or schedule, and assists particularly with defining the change, obtaining accurate estimates of the hours involved, and recommending budget adjustment.
  • Monitors the use of available engineering computer programs, technical advances and engineering management control techniques on the projects assigned.
  • Formulates and recommends for approval, engineering plans and programs for assigned projects. 

 

Leadership

  • Manages the work efforts of managers or professionals.
  • Responsible for staffing decisions, performance appraisals, and pay reviews.
  • Supports the training of new team members as required, through both formal training courses and on-the-job training. 
    Makes decisions based on business objectives and allocated resources.
  • May be responsible for a major functional area and not have any subordinate employees
  • Participates in planning and budgeting.
  • Prepares, assembles or contributes to board reports.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's or master's degree (or international equivalent) and 15+ years of relevant experience or 19+ years of relevant work experience​

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Typically requires bachelor's or master's degree (or international equivalent) and 13-15 years of relevant experience or 17-19 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience managing engineering design efforts, including management of 3rd Party designers.
  • Aviation project experience is preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of industry/regulatory codes and standards and design criteria. 
  • Extensive technical knowledge of engineering systems, calculations, applications of engineering methods and materials and applications of 3-D computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) to engineering problems.
  • Sound working knowledge of Australian regulations, standards, specifications and codes.
  • Proficient knowledge of activities and operations in other functions including procurement, construction, environmental safety and health (ES&H), and quality assurance.
  • Prior demonstrated capability to present information and analysis to senior management.
  • The successful candidate will possess strong oral and written communication skills; interpersonal skills, be able to interact closely and frequently with key stakeholders and contractors while maintaining necessary levels of commercial awareness.
