Project Overview:
Bechtel is the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) partner on the Northrop Grumman team to deliver the Sentinel Program, which is modernizing the ground-based leg of the U.S. nuclear deterrent triad, including intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) systems and launch infrastructure. Bechtel’s scope of service in Sentinel’s current Engineering & Manufacturing Development phase focuses on the ground infrastructure component of the program.
A major contractor for the United States and allied governments, Bechtel has handled such efforts as chemical weapons demilitarization projects, missile-defense, infrastructure, base operations, procurement and project management, and restoration and recovery spanning half a century. Job Summary:
In this role, you will conduct field investigations and client interviews to determine work scope and cost estimates for a project’s civil/structural aspects. You will lead design, development, modification, evaluation, and constructability reviews of civil/structural components and processes. Your technical expertise will ensure the unique and complex requirements of a project’s civil/structural aspects are met.
This position reports to the CSA Engineering Group Supervisor (EGS). The Sr. Resident Engineer is responsible for onsite engineering support activities (all disciplines) at multiple construction sites associated with the Sentinel project. Construction sites are currently located in California and Utah. The Sr. RE will be permanently assigned to the Sentinel Project Management Office in Ogden, UT with expected trips to the construction sites as needed. The Sr. RE position can expect travel greater than 50% of the time with trips potentially lasting months. Critical candidate experience includes having a strong background in civil engineering or architecture, coordinating of site utilities, and experience interfacing engineering with the construction and procurement functions. The Sr. RE will assume technical responsibilities for interpreting and organizing specific design packages necessary to support and advance construction and procurement. The Sr. RE is expected to make decisions independently concerning problems and opportunities. The Sr. RE will maintain contact with the Bechtel Design Engineering team in Ogden PMO as well as key counterpart personnel of client and stakeholder organizations relating to engineering. Work Location: Ogden, Weber County, UT. Possess active security clearance or ability to obtain security clearance. Unescorted access required. Candidate must successfully clear National Agency Check (NAC). All employees are subject to and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Major Responsibilities:
Level I
- Plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of the civil/structural engineering work for a global business unit, a project or staff group to include the preparation of original designs layouts, details, drawings and specifications for structures, building, roadways, railroads, etc.
- Designs, develops, modifies, and evaluates Civil/Structural components and processes utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures
- Designs structures using advanced knowledge of structural analysis, including statics, dynamics, and materials engineering
- Determines the appropriate use of various structural elements such as steel, wood, masonry, and concrete to ensure appropriate material is used based on load or stress requirements
- Originates and checks complex structural engineering deliverables, such as steel and concrete calculations, specifications, and material requisitions
- Analyzes problems with conflicting design requirements, sketches ideas and possible solutions
- Analyzes and reports on the suitability of unconventional materials, techniques and/or difficult coordination requirements
- Plans, coordinates, or prepares equipment, work and material specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations
- Prepares procurement and subcontract requisition documents and performs associated technical bid evaluations with award recommendations
Level II
- Leads the design, development, modification, and evaluation of Civil/Structural components and processes utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures
- Reviews and approves key design documents, supplier drawings and data, material specifications, drawings, change orders, and bid summaries for the project to which assigned
- Prepares or oversees the preparation of discipline estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and supports implementation and assists with performance reporting
- Interprets new or special regulations, codes, standards, criteria, and performance data
- Leads constructability reviews
Education and Experience Requirements:
Level I
- Requires a bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8-10 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience
Level II
- Requires a bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 10-13 years of relevant experience or 14-17 years of relevant work experience
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Bachelor's of Science in an Engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited university.
- Master's degree in an engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited university.
- Professional Engineering Registration in the US.
- Prior onsite engineering experience on a DOD Project.
- Prior experience interfacing with the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
- Prior experience with United Facilities Criteria, Unified Facility Guidance Specifications, and Safety Manual EM385.
- Familiar with government System Engineering and Configuration Management Programs.
- Familiar with subcontract management and construction planning/estimating.
- High comfort level in the field and willing to exercise engineering judgement.
- Skilled in optimizing technical solutions to complex problems with multiple stakeholders.
- Must be able to obtain a site security badge.
- Must be physically able to conduct field inspections and participate in project walk-downs which may require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, using fall protection and other personal protective equipment (PPE), walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, and maneuvering around very small and/or confined spaces.
