Project Overview:

Bechtel is the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) partner on the Northrop Grumman team to deliver the Sentinel Program, which is modernizing the ground-based leg of the U.S. nuclear deterrent triad, including intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) systems and launch infrastructure. Bechtel’s scope of service in Sentinel’s current Engineering & Manufacturing Development phase focuses on the ground infrastructure component of the program.

A major contractor for the United States and allied governments, Bechtel has handled such efforts as chemical weapons demilitarization projects, missile-defense, infrastructure, base operations, procurement and project management, and restoration and recovery spanning half a century. Job Summary:

In this role, you will use 2-D/3-D computer-aided design (CAD) to develop designs for electrical engineering such as earthwork, drainage, road design, and foundation. You will help construct detailed scale models, develop work plans, and review drawings for quality, accuracy, and completion. Your collaboration across disciplines will coordinate compliance and quality in the overall project design.

 

This position, located in Ogden, UT, is for a SmartPlant 3D Designer who will prepare electrical 3D designs as well as 2D electrical AutoCAD and SmartSketch designs to support new facility infrastructure design for DOD and USAF projects. The successful candidate must have strong organizational and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving abilities, can-do attitude, and the desire to innovate designs. #LI-SNH

 

Major Responsibilities:

Level 1

  • Develops designs for electrical engineering systems such as earthwork, drainage, road design, foundation, and steel detailing with minimum supervision from which detailed scale models and/or construction drawings are completed.
  • Assists in constructing detailed scale models.
  • Ensures compliance with approved electrical design standard, applicable installation codes, and regulations in own work and by those assigned, to provide quality design.
  • Reviews and checks calculations, design models, drawings, and design documents prepared by assigned designers/drafters for quality, accuracy, neatness, functionality, and satisfactory completion.
  • Participates in constructability reviews.
  • Coordinates the reviews for the accuracy of bulk material quantity take-offs and material requisitions for materials applicable to the discipline.
  • Works with designers in other disciplines to coordinate overall design and technical requirements.
  • Assists in the development of work plans, budgets, and schedules for basic electrical designer tasks based on input and direction from supervisor in designated discipline.
  • Provides on-the-job training for personnel within electrical design.
  • Generates 2D drawings or 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) design models with minimal guidance from others.

Level 2

  • Develops designs for complete and complex electrical engineering systems such as earthwork, drainage, road design, foundation, and steel detailing with minimum supervision from which detailed scale models and/or construction drawings are completed.
  • When working in a lead-role, assigns tasks to best use the knowledge, experience, and capabilities of less experienced electrical designers/drafters assigned.
  • Ensures compliance with approved electrical design standards, installation codes, and regulations in own work and by those assigned, to provide quality design.
  • Develops work plans, budgets, and schedules for basic electrical designer tasks based on input and direction from supervisor in designated discipline.
  • Generates 2D drawings or 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) design models of high complexity with minimal guidance from others.

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

Level 1

  • Requires an AA/AS or Certificate in Engineering/CAD with 3-4 years of experience or 5-6 years of relevant work experience.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Level 2

  • Requires an AA/AS or Certificate in Engineering/CAD with 5-6 years of experience or 6-9 years of relevant work experience. 
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge & application of NEC code and NEMA/ANSI/IEEE Standards.
  • Must have experience with an electronic Cable Management System, such as the SETROUTE program, and be able to input and complete corrections to the database.
  • Must be able to collaborate well with other disciplines.
  • Ability to cope with conflicting deadlines, frequent interruptions, and multiple tasks.
  • Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to, drawings for electrical systems and equipment on nuclear or industrial process facilities, data centers, central utility plants, or complex building electrical systems.
  • Hands-on and advanced experience using Smartplant 3D, SmartSketch, and AutoCAD. 
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
  •  Ability to utilize engineering and office automation tools effectively.
  • Broad knowledge of the application of electrical engineering design principles.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, schematics, and layouts.
  • Knowledge of Bechtel Corporate guides and standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering deliverables, such as drawings and specifications.
  •  Ability to express technical issues in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally.
  • Ability to resolve design issues independently and collaboratively with other engineering disciplines, construction, and the client.
  • Modeling of piping, HVAC, and Mechanical equipment in a Smartplant 3D model environment.
  • Previous DoD/DoE, USACE, NAVFAC, USAF, or NASA project experience. Experience working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ISO-9000.
