Senior Systems Engineer, UPF

This position will provide support to the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) located at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. 

 

UPF will be built by 2025 for $6.5 billion and will be a first-of-its-kind complex for enriched uranium operations in support of Y-12 missions. UPF is one of the Department of Energy’s largest investments in Tennessee since the Manhattan Project and one of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s largest construction projects. When complete, UPF will: replace a 70-year-old facility with modern buildings, reduce operational costs and energy consumption, improve worker safety, and provided enriched uranium capabilities well into the future. 

 

The UPF Project has multiple work schedules that are subject to change and may require employees to work overtime and/or nightshift when a business need arises. Most of the UPF project works on a 9-80 schedule with every other Friday off. Start times are flexible but the standard workweek is: Monday - Thursday from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm.

 

The schedule on working Fridays is: 7:00 am- 3:30 pm. Work schedule and overtime are to be approved in advance by supervisors. Eligibility for this position requires US citizenship; the successful candidate must provide proof of US citizenship in order to obtain badge access to the site. Candidate must complete security questionnaire and successfully clear site access requirements check. All employees are subject to and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a security clearance, as applicable. 

 

Position Overview:

The Senior Electrical/I&C Engineer will be working as part of the Systems Engineering team evaluating systems, structures, and components with their requirements to identify failure modes, critical attributes, and acceptance criteria. You will be preparing technical reports and verification documentation. The ideal candidate will have experience in process system design and will be capable of developing design documents that incorporate the applicable design requirements. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client. 

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering work for a global business unit usually in one discipline in a project or staff group.
  • Ability to work independently, use engineering judgment, and devise new approaches to solving problems.
  • Perform work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and/or difficult coordination requirements.
  • Perform work using Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
  • Duties include reviewing requirements for systems, structures, or components to determine failure modes, critical attributes, and acceptance criteria associated with the requirements for the systems, structures, or components. Also identify and review design/vendor/construction documentation that supports the verification of critical attributes for systems, structures, or components.
  • Support disposition of supplier deviation disposition requests.  
  • Review and disposition of field change notices and non-conformance reports. 
  • Support the creation of a work environment that fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.

 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Grade 25 - BS degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Nuclear, Industrial, or Systems Engineering (or approved equivalent) from an accredited university or college with 6 years of related experience. 
  • Grade 26 - BS degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Nuclear, Industrial, or Systems Engineering (or approved equivalent) from an accredited university or college with a minimum of 9 years of related experience.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a site security badge for access to the worksite. Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check, which includes verification of employment and education.  

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Grade 25 - Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Grade 26 - Practical work experience in equipment design and procurement. Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards, Broad knowledge of the application of engineering design principles. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel).  

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Grade 25 - Professional Engineers license. Previous UPF experience. Knowledge of Bechtel Corporate guides, standards and Bechtel standard computer applications. Experience with system design and deliverables. Experience with Systems Engineering. 
  • Grade 26 - Professional Engineers license. Previous UPF experience. Knowledge of Bechtel Corporate guides, standards and Bechtel standard computer applications. Experience with system design and deliverables. Previous experience in design and equipment selection for waste processing, nuclear, or chemical facilities. Experience with Systems Engineering.
