This position will provide support to the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) located at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. UPF will be built by 2025 for $6.5 billion and will be a first-of-its-kind complex for enriched uranium operations in support of Y-12 missions. UPF is one of the Department of Energy’s largest investments in Tennessee since the Manhattan Project and one of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s largest construction projects. When complete, UPF will: replace a 70-year-old facility with modern buildings, reduce operational costs and energy consumption, improve worker safety, and provided enriched uranium capabilities well into the future. 

 

The UPF project works on a 9-80 schedule with every other Friday off. Start times are flexible but the standard workweek is: Monday - Thursday from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm. The schedule on working Fridays is: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm. Eligibility for this position requires US citizenship; the successful candidate must provide proof of US citizenship in order to obtain badge access to the site. Candidate must complete security questionnaire and successfully clear site access requirements check. All employees are subject and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a security clearance, as applicable. 

 

Position Scope:

You will be working as part of the Mechanical Systems team designing the plant systems. You will be preparing technical reports and studies and design documentation, performing calculations using engineering software, and supporting systems. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in process system design and will be capable of developing design documents, including piping and instrument diagrams and equipment data sheets, that incorporate the applicable design requirements, including nuclear safety requirements. You will be interfacing and coordinating with other engineering disciplines and the client in the development of the design.  

 

Role Overview:

  • The primary role of the Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer is to plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering work for a global business unit usually in one discipline in a project or staff group. 
  • Must have the ability to work independently, use engineering judgment, and devise new approaches to solving problems. 
  • Perform work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements. 
  • Perform work using Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) and appropriate 2-D and 3-D computer-aided design and computer-aided engineering (CAD and CAE) tools. 
  • Prepare and/or assist in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals, forecasts and change orders. 
  • Review and disposition of field change notices and non-conformance reports. 
  • Support the creation of a work environment that fosters openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction. 

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Level 1:  BS degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering from an accredited university or college with 6+ years of related experience.
  • Level 2:  BS degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering from an accredited university or college with 9+ years of related experience.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a site security badge for access to the worksite.
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and a background check for DOE security clearance. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Understanding of construction roles, practices, and economics.
  • Knowledge of industry and regulatory guides, codes, and standards.
  • Knowledge of engineering planning and control methods including computerized methods.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel). 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineers license in Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering. Previous UPF experience.
  • Knowledge of Bechtel Corporate guides and standards and relevant CAD, CAE, and Bechtel standard computer applications e.g. INSPEC.
  • Experience with system design and deliverables e.g. P&ID, Line Designation Tables, Design Pressure Design Temperature, Equipment List, Calculations.
