Project Description:

Bechtel National, Inc. (BNI), Bechtel’s government services business, is one of the top providers to departments and agencies of the U.S. and British governments. Its successes include many large, first-of-a-kind projects in government site management, environmental restoration, defense, space, energy, and national and homeland security. This position will provide support to the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) located at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.


UPF will be will be built by 2025 for $6.5 billion and will be a first-of-its-kind complex for enriched uranium operations in support of Y-12 missions. UPF is one of the Department of Energy’s largest investments in Tennessee since the Manhattan Project and one of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s largest construction projects. When complete, UPF will: replace a 70-year-old facility with modern buildings, reduce operational costs and energy consumption, improve worker safety, and provide enriched uranium capabilities well into the future.


The UPF project works on a 9-80 schedule with every other Friday off. Start times are flexible but the standard work week is: Monday - Thursday from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm. The schedule on working Fridays is: 7:00am-3:30 pm.


Eligibility for this position requires US citizenship; successful candidate must provide proof of US citizenship in order to obtain badge access to the site. Candidate must complete security questionnaire and successfully clear site access requirements check. All employees are subject and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a security clearance, as applicable.



Role Overview:

Establishes routine industrial hygiene processes and programs on a project or in an office setting; assists with integrating specific industrial hygiene requirements into planning, design, and construction activities. Interprets routine industrial hygiene requirements, 10 CFR 851 requirements, evaluates and applies basic scientific principles, formulates scopes of work, develops and implements industrial hygiene plans, procedures and methodologies suitable for achieving industrial hygiene objectives, and provides technical assistance to industrial hygiene technologists. This role is to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and recommend controls in workplace conditions that may cause workers' injury or illness. Successful candidate will use environmental monitoring and analytical methods to detect the extent of worker exposure and employ engineering, work practice controls, and other methods to control potential health hazards. Additionally, This candidate must have experience in the application of hazard evaluation procedures.  This position reports to Industrial Hygiene Lead.


Principle responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Establishes routine industrial hygiene processes and programs on  project
  • Assists with integrating specific industrial hygiene requirements by providing input to the ES&H Manager and/or Project Industrial Hygienist Lead  regarding design criteria, construction plans, specifications, subcontracts, job hazard/safety analysis and permits.
  • Develops and implements routine industrial hygiene scopes of work and industrial hygiene plans, procedures, and methodologies to achieve industrial hygiene objectives.
  • Conduct and monitor field evaluation of hazards, perform data analysis tracking and trending.
  • Work closely with construction staff and ES&H to troubleshoot emerging issues.
  • Mitigate identified and upcoming hazards by recommending engineering or other as controls as needed.
  • Create technical reports and documents based on data collected.
  • Evaluate designs and field modifications, including 3 dimensional modeling to, verify designs meet the requirements of 10 CFR 851, Worker Safety and Health Rule
  • Perform ergonomic analysis in office and construction site settings
  • Assist with the development and improvement of the nuclear safety culture on project.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environment, Safety and Health or Certified Industrial Hygienist and 3 years of progressive professional experience.
  • In lieu of degree, must have 9 or more years of progressive professional experience.
  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
  • Must be able to obtain site security badge for access to work site


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of industrial hygiene standards, regulations, methodologies and resources.
  • Knowledge of engineering, construction, and subcontract work processes.
  • Knowledge of monitoring and sampling methodologies.
  • Knowledge of engineering control systems to mitigate routine hazards.
  • Knowledge of routine instrumentation and their capability and use.
  • Knowledge of the types of general administrative control methodologies.
  • Knowledge of personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication and knowledge of computer applications.
  • Must have experience with analyzing and documenting hazards for a Category 2 Nuclear Facility using Guidelines for Hazard Evaluation Procedures
  • Must have experience performing ergonomic evaluations to prevent musculoskeletal injury.
  • Must have experience with analysis and control requirements of 10 CFR 851
  • Microsoft Office skills intermediate level.
  • Must be able to work overtime with little or short notice

  • CPR, AED and first aid qualifications
  • Experience with labor and medical interactions

  • Skill in risk communication delivery of complex topics into laymen’s terms
