Project Overview:

Bechtel National, Inc. (BNI), Bechtel’s government services business, is one of the top providers to departments and agencies of the U.S. and British governments. Its successes include many large, first-of-a-kind projects in government site management, environmental restoration, defense, space, energy, and national and homeland security. This position will provide support for projects within the NS&E portfolio as needed.  

Eligibility for this position requires US citizenship; the successful candidate must provide proof of US citizenship in order to obtain badge access to the site. Candidate must complete security questionnaire and successfully clear necessary required site access requirements check. All employees are subject to and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a security clearance, as applicable.

Job Summary:

The ES&H Specialist has technical responsibility for interpreting OSHA requirements, evaluating, and applying appropriate health and safety principles, plans, and methodologies suitable for achieving and maintaining compliance with requirements. Provides technical assistance to other safety professionals, construction, subcontractors, and start-up, with the goal of zero-accidents. This position reports to the ES&H Functional Manager.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Establishes and implements routine dropped object prevention program on the project.
  • Assists with integrating specific industrial safety requirements by providing input to the ES&H Manager regarding construction plans, specifications, subcontracts, job hazard/safety analysis and permits.
  • Monitors and assesses work activities and plans, procedures, and methodologies to achieve ESH objectives.
  • Conduct and monitor field evaluation of hazards, provide data for analysis tracking and trending.
  • Work closely with construction staff and ES&H to troubleshoot emerging issues.
  • Mitigate identified and upcoming hazards by recommending engineering or other controls as needed.
  • Participate in incident investigations as directed by the ESH Manager.
  • Assist with implementation and improvement of the nuclear safety culture on the project.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) related to occupational safety or health and less than 1 year of relevant experience or 5-6 years of relevant work experience.
  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
  • Must be able to obtain a site security badge for access to the worksite.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of ESH standards, regulations, methodologies and resources.
  • Knowledge of engineering, construction, and subcontract work processes.
  • Knowledge of engineering control systems to mitigate routine hazards.
  • Knowledge of the types of general administrative control methodologies.
  • Knowledge of personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication.
  • Must have experience with working at heights, scaffolding, and dropped object prevention program implementation.
  • Microsoft Office skills novice level.
  • Must be able to work overtime with little or short notice.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience implementing Bechtel CP 203 – Dropped Object Prevention
  • CPR, AED and first aid qualifications.
  • Training delivery
  • Skills in the risk communication delivery of complex topics into laymen’s terms.
